Cousin Linda James, Have you heard of the 1709-1710 Palatine Migration from Germany to England. Good Queen Bess paid for their passage to the New York Colony and put them to work trying to gather pitch from the local pine forests to be used on British ships. Unfortunately the trees were not suitable for that venture so they were left to their own devises for survival. Some tried to purchase land in Schoharie County but ran into trouble. They suffered very much during the winter months and the death rate was substantial. I have a book that tells all about their struggles and it is indeed very sad. I also descend from the Keater Family but that surname has had so many different spellings that one gets lost in the various records when trying to figure out that family. I would also say that Winne/Winney & Merckel has also been fun with all the various spellings.
