Biography

James Meredith Sr. born probably between 1710-1720 married Mildred Bagby. She died August 1796, in Surry County, North Carolina. James died May 1790, in Surry County, North Carolina.

The earliest documentation of James and Mildred Bagby is in 1760 and 1762 when the birth and baptism of two of their sons, Samuel & Daniel, is recorded in St. James Northam Parish of Goochland County, Virginia. This was documented in the Douglas Register.

According to family tradition James Meredith Jr. married Mary Crews in Bedford County, Virginia in 1769 and it is possible the entire Meredith family was there at that time. James Meredith Sr., his wife, Mildred Bagby, and the family probably entered North Carolina in 1771 as he appears on the Surry County tax roll that year. Surry County was formed from Rowan County in 1770 and at the present time no Rowan Co records have been found for him.

James and his family probably came into North Carolina on the Great Wagon Road, which came in at the northeast corner of what was then Surry County, North Carolina (that part is now Stokes County.) Possibly James marked off his land at that time. He entered two 600-acre parcels of land in May 1779; they were surveyed 4 May 1780 with his sons Samuel and Daniel serving as chain carriers. The land was recorded on 3 Nov 1784. According to the book Stokes County Heritage, tobacco is king in Stokes County and has been since the county was formed. Stokes County is one of six counties in North Carolina that have always primarily depended on tobacco for its income. It therefore seems safe to assume that James raised tobacco.

Mildred Bagby was the wife of James Meredith. Her parentage has not been established at this time. It is possible her father was John Bagby and that her brothers were John (b. Hanover Co, Va 1737, md. Theodosia Morris), Thomas, and Richard Bagby. It has also been surmised that James Meredith had been married once before and his older children were by that first marriage, with the younger children by his marriage to Mildred. There is no proof and this is merely a supposition.

Research Notes

  • The marriage date was obtained from The Douglas Register, wherein the marriage date given (unless otherwise noted) is the date of the first child born to the couple in question. In this case, their first child was presumably Samuel, since his birth coincides with their wedding day, which leads one to believe that James, the father, was married before Mildred and had four prior children who were not Mildred's -- Samuel being her first child.
  • James Meredith born probably between 1710-1720 married Mildred Bagby who died August 1796, in Surry County, North Carolina. James died May 1790, in Surry County, North Carolina.
  • While the surname Meredith is of Welsh extraction, the y-DNA of patrilineal descendants (Haplogroup R-M222) is characteristic of Irish ancestry, in contrast to that of Meredith families from Wales (which is typically I-M253.)
  • It is not known whether James Meredith or a previous ancestor was the original immigrant.
  • The earliest documentation of James and Mildred Bagby is in 1760 and 1762 when the birth and baptism of two of their sons, Samuel & Daniel, is recorded in St. James Northam Parish of Goochland County, Virginia. This was documented in the Douglas Register.
  • The will of James Meredith, Sr., f/o Capt. William Meredith. The will of James Meredith dated 15 Feb 1790, Surry Co., NC Wills 1771-1827.

Could he be Meredith-72? While they could present two entirely separate persons, on Ancestry, some trees list James's first wife as a Lucretia Bunch who he had several children with and then a second wife being Miss Mildred Bagby, presumably after Lucretia had passed (prior to 1760? it's unclear). I'm unsure based on the documentation but the additional lack of knowledge on Meredith-72 along with this profile having him being wed at age 45 would make me think he might have had an earlier wife. There's also a ten year gap between sons John and Samuel which would make more sense if there were two separate mothers.

Note that the y-DNA Haplogroup of multiple male descendants is R1b-M222, which is highly characteristic of Niall "Noigiallach, High King of Ireland, or Niall of the Nine Hostages. Visit the Irish Royal House of O'Neill Dynasty Project.

The Meredith surname is of Welsh origin, but James Meredith's y-DNA is from Ireland, not Wales, as many have presumed.

The middle name Hugh does not appear in any of the sources. I believe it is an artifact of poor, unsourced, online family trees and should be removed from this profile and the profile of his son by the same name.

Meredith-1304 and Meredith-194 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth location, same death date and place, same spouse and marriage date. Same name.
