According to family records: '...Mary Stanley Meredith brought her eight children, the oldest was 12, the youngest less than one year old, in 1829 to Indiana. She left her husband (James Hugh Meredith) in North Carolina, as he ran a still which she opposed, and she wished to leave a slave state. Her first cousin was Levi Coffin, President of the Underground Railway. She was related to the President James Polk family (?). Her husband refused to change. She and her children passed over the Cumberland Gap with one horse and a large 2-wheeled cart. She moved to Wayne County, Indiana, where she had relatives. Her children were Joanna, Thomas Jefferson, James Harvey, Jabez, Rosanna, Jesse, Susanna, and William Wesley Meredith. Mary and her children, except Joanna and Jabez, moved to Lynnville, on a farm two miles northeast in 1858. Thomas Jefferson and Jesse married Macy sisters - Susan and Luzena, daughters of William Macy who married Phebe Hiatt, a Quaker preacher and teacher.'
