Matthäus Merian der Ältere war ein schweizerisch-deutscher Kupferstecher und Verleger aus der vornehmen Basler Familie Merian. Er gab zahlreiche Landkarten, Städteansichten und Chroniken und als sein Hauptwerk die Topographia Germaniae heraus. [1]


Matthäus Merian der Ältere (or "Matthew", "the Elder", or "Sr.") was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house. He was a member of the patrician Basel Merian family.[2]
