Biography

George Merriam (also spelled Meriam and Miriam) was born about 1603 in England.

He married Susanna Raven on 16 Oct 1627 in Turnbridge or Tonbrige, Kent, England[1]. They emigrated in 1638 on "The Castle"[citation needed] and settled in Concord, where he died 29 December 1675.

His father, William Merriam, left him a bequest in his 1635 will: "Item I will to George Mirriam my Son five pounds and to his daughter Mary my goddaughter five shillings."[1]

William was made a freeman 2 June 1641.[2]

His will, dated 8 October 1675, proved 4 April 1676 names beloved wife Susan, daughters "Sarah Gove of Cambridge, Elizab. West of Salem, Hannah Axdell of Marlbury, Susan Scotchford of Concord, and Abigail Bateman of Concord" and sons Samuel. The will was witnessed by Joseph Estabrook, Robert Merriam and Thomas Burges.[3][4][5]

Disputed Third Daughter Mary

Mary Merriam is not the daughter of George Merriam and Susan Raven. In his will proven 4 Apr 1676 he names his 5 daughters Sarah Gove, Elizabeth West, Hannah Axdell, Susan Scotchford and Abigail Bateman. There is no mention of Mary Hubbard or son-in-law and grandchildren as there would be if she had died before George wrote his will. [7][1] Both of George's daughters named Mary found in Pope died young, 1628 and 1646. She could not have been born after 1646 and be the wife of John Hubbard. There is also no proof the LNAB of his wife was Merriam

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

According to the will of George's father, William; Mary, daughter of George, grand daughter of William was beqeathed something in William's will which suggests the 2nd Mary on the list of children above, as this will is said to be found by William S. Appleton, Esq. recorded in the city of Rochester, Kent dated September 8, 1635 and proved November 27, 1635. That would be within the lifetime of the 2nd Mary on the list of children.

This according to a document published by the Worcester Society of Antiquity; :Some Miriams, and Their Connection With Other Families; Rufus N. Meriam; Collections of the Worcester Society of Antiquity, Volume V11; Worcester, Worcester, MA; pub. 1888; Private Press of Franklin P. Rice MDCCCLXXXVII.

The original is in the University of California libraries.

Here is a link to the papers. The exact reference is hard to find as the papers on the Meriam genealogy is buried in the entire set of documents.

I suggest a profile be started for the 2nd Mary, daughter of George, grandfather of William.

Mary Merriam who married John Hubbard is not the daughter of George Merriam and Susan Raven. In his will proven 4 Apr 1676 he names his 5 daughters Sarah Grove, Elizabeth West, Hannah Axdell, Susan Scotchford and Abigail Bateman. There is no mention of Mary Hubbard or son-in-law and grandchildren as there would be if she had died before George wrote his will. Both of George's daughters named Mary died young, 1628 and 1646. She should be detached from these parents.

Reading John Hubbard's profile it looks like his wife should be Mary Unknown. Normally I go for the fewest connection changes, but we could avoid a redirect if we disconnect Mary Merriam from husband and children instead of disconnecting her from the parents. It looks like there isn't a profile for either daughter Mary at the moment.

Other opinions from PGM leadership?

If you decide to do that I'd suggest picking one of the two Mary's and use her dates with the references I added to her mother's profile for the list of children and then create a profile for the other Mary. Looks like a lot of what I did on that profile should also be here or should have been done here to begin with. I've corrected several errors and omissions in Pope's Merriam Genealogy dealing with the children on Susan's profile but not here yet. Advise if I should duplicate that here as well.

I don't know how old the tombstone for John Hubbard is but it is clear from the picture on FindAGrave that she was named Mary Merriam when that tombstone was engraved.

If he is PGM shouldn't his wife also be? Also, I do not believe his wife's parents are as indicated on her profile. She is not mentioned by Anderson in the Associations section of John Coolidge, husband of her supposed sister Mary Ravens but he does mention sister Grace (Ravens) (Sherman) (Rodgers) Porter, Also, Richard Ravens and Elizabeth Hedge spent their entire lives first in Dedham, Essex and then in Wattisfield, Suffolk far to the north of Kent where Susan Raven was supposedly born and where she married George in Tonbridge, Kent in 1627.

I agree, she should be PGM.

TAG 62 "English Origin of Grace Ravens" lists out all of the children in that family and there is no Susan. [1], so I agree she should be disconnected from parents.

Is the marriage record/LNAB for Susan even confirmed?

So far there is nothing to confirm the information from Pope's Merriam Genealogy that her LNAB was Raven or the date of marriage. Everything else either cites Pope or copied him without attribution. We may want to leave her LNAB as is for now in case something does turn up but should proceed with the disconnection citing the TAG article as authority,

Just did a search on FindMyPast.UK There is a record for a marriage of Susan Raven 1627 in Tonbridge, SS Peter and Paul , Kent, England behind the paywall. A record also exists for George Miriam same year and location. Unfortunately I cannot find another site that has the Kent Marriage and Bans Records. They are not included in the large England: Marriages 1583 - 1973 found on FamilySearch, Ancestry, etc.
