Biography

Unknown Origin

Since her LNAB has yet to be proven, we do not yet know her exact origin. However, from records naming the relationships of her husband and son, we can be certain she was some blood relation to either Robert Merriam or Mary Sheafe.[1] [2] That indicates with a high degree of certainty that she was from County Kent, England where the Merriam and Sheafe immigrants originated. Based on an age at marriage c. 1649 of 16-25 she was most likely born from 1624-1633.

Research Notes

Last Name at Birth

Torrey suggests three possibilities for LNAB Sheafe, Merriam, and Morrison. [3] The most commonly found name is Merriam undoubtedly originating from the wills of Robert Merriam and his wife Mary Sheafe who make bequests to her son Jonathan who was living with them. [1][2] Both of their wills name him "cousin" (nephew) and leave him large bequests including Robert's farm in Concord. This has led to later sources suggesting or stating she was the sister of Robert Merriam despite the total lack of evidence and the biological impossibility of such a claim. [4][5][6] A memorial for John Hubbard erected in the late 19th century names her Mary Merriam of Concord, Mass. [7] Sheafe is found as a possible alternative to Merriam in a few publications. [8][9] A footnote to the TAG article cites Putnam's Magazine Vol 6:50 which has an argument pointing to her being related to Mary Sheafe and is cited by Torrey. So far Torrey's reference suggesting Morrison has not been identified.

Disputed Parents She is not the daughter of George Merriam and Sarah Raven. They had two daughters named Mary both of whom died young. Mary1 bapt. 30 Nov 1628 Tonbridge[10] bur. 4 Dec 1628 Tonbridge [11] Mary2 bapt. 14 Nov 1630 Tonbridge[12] d. 10 Aug 1646 Concord[13] There is no record for an additional daughter Mary who would have to have been born after 1646, too young to be the wife of John Hubbard. In his will proven 4 Apr 1676 George names his 5 daughters Sarah Gove, Elizabeth West, Hannah Axdell, Susan Scotchford and Abigail Bateman. There is no mention of Mary Hubbard or son-in-law and grandchildren as there would be if she had died before George wrote his will. [14] It has not been proven her LNAB is Merriam. She has been disconnected from these parents.

Merriam, from (de) Meryham

Kent and possibly East Sussex (15th Century or earlier) -> Massachusetts (1638-1716) -> Connecticut (1716-1820's) -> Ohio (1820's-1870s) -> Michigan

My 11th Great Grandfather and his brothers immigrated to the new world on the Castle of London landing at the Port of Charleston, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and settled in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Information largely from Sue Thompson and/or the Merriam Family Tree webhub (formerly Merriam Family Papers), Thank you! Please do not confuse with the Merriman's, an Oxfordshire family which settled in Wallingford, CT, same place my 9GG moved to, especially given the common spelling error's in names in old records. made more complicated in that both lines have a Captain named Nathaniel in the families. The below excerpt was posted on the old Merriam Family Papers website with an apparent original attributation to Chapter 8 of The Life of Levi Parsons Merriam by John F.P. Merriam, 1982:

The earliest known record of anyone bearing the name Merriam or Meryham, as it was spelt, occurs in the Kentish Lay Subsidy roles for 12 95, which show that Laurence de Meryham was taxed for an estate known as Isenhurst about a mile and 1/2 north-west of Heathfield in East Sussex, but it has not been possible to trace the family tree as far back as this. Other Merriams were assesed for taxes in the fourteenth century at Waldron, south-west of Heathfield and at Goudhurst and Boughton Monchelsea in County of Kent . Goudhurst is not more than fifteen miles from Isenhurst, and Boughton a further eight towards Maidstone.

However, going back to the original subsidy role (which can be viewed at the BHO site here) shows a few differences from the above record- A) It was 1296, not 1295 B) It was [East] Sussex, not Kent, and C) He (listed as "Laur' de Meryham") was one of 20 individuals assessed at "Isenherst", so he didn't own the estate as the above implies. Specifically he was assessed 6s/8¼d at "Villata de Isenherst" in the "Hundr' de Thylle" of the "Rapus de Peuenese" (=The rape of Pevensey, a rape being a feudal era subdivision of a shire consisting of a group of hundreds). His total is the 4th largest of the 20 names listed under Isenherst (the 20 total £4/6/7, individually ranging from 11s/11¼d down to a Shilling and a farthing {1s/0¼d}). Two other interesting records I turned up at searching at BHO include- -In the Feet of Fines for Sussex, entry 1717 dating to 3 Edward II (1330/1 I believe) reads "John de Meryham and Isabel his wife (by William de Berewyk) v. Robert Whitbred of Sutton by Sefford; 2 messuages, 34 acres 1 rood of land, 30 acres of heath in Sutton and Walderne; to John and Isabel and heirs of their bodies to hold of Robert and his heirs by payment of 100s. yearly during life of Robert and by render of a rose at Midsummer after his death, with contingent reversion to Robert and his heirs. (File 53. No. 28.)"[1] -a Deed (C.4523) dated The feast of St. George, 32 Henry VI (which I believe would mean April 23 1453/4) has a John Meryham co-granting rights to a piece of land called Calbrayne in the parish of Lynton. It is possible that John is 'of Lodyngton in the Parish of Maydeston' (It is unclear if that is meant to refer to just the other co-grantor or to both of them).[2]

My 12th Great Grandfather, William Merriam Buried 23 Sep. 1635 in Hadlow, Kent, England. Married about 1580 in England to Sarah ? (likely either Pyper/Piper or Burges/Burgess) Between the two tree's at MFT it is given that he was born in 11 May 1564 in Tudeley, Kent, says marriage was Abt. 1580, and a death date of Nov. 27th, 1635 in Hadlow, Kent but giving the burial date of 23 Sep. 1635 (so he would of been buried 2 months and 4 days before he died - the two tree's don't line up). Clothier In addition to Hadlow, he and Sara owned land in Tudeley, Sevenoaks, Goudhurst, & Yalding, all in Kent. The 1590 will of James Burgess of Tudeley in England mentions a William Merriam, presuambly the same individual.

It is quite the mystery as to who she and her parents were. There are quite a few hints but so far not enough to solve the mystery. On her husband John's tombstone her name is listed as Mary Merriam but we do not know if that tombstone dates from the time of John's death or was erected by descendants in the late 19th century. The language of the inscription strongly favors the late 19th century. Mary (Sheafe) Merriam, wife of Robert brother of George, among other bequests to various relatives she makes the first and largest one to "cousin" (nephew) Jonathan Hubbard who was residing with her when her will was written 15 Feb 1686/87. This is likely the son of John and Mary Hubbard b. 1659 in Wethersfield, CT. This begs the question as to how this relationship is established. First, Jonathon would actually be her grandnephew. This means that either John Hubbard or his wife Mary is a nephew or niece. Robert Merriam in his will also named "cousin" Jonathon Hubbard. So now we just need to discover which parent of John Hubbard or his wife Mary is brother(-in-law) or sister(-in-law) to Robert and his wife. However, there is the story that John Hubbard lived with probably Robert and Mary after his arrival until he moved to Wethersfield, CT and met his future wife Mary during that time. Since they were childless they may have developed a strong bond of affection with him and may have fostered his son Jonathon as well. That could explain naming him "cousin" in their wills. The Lowell, MA Vital Records recording John Hubbard's death in Hatfield names her Mary Merriam sister of Dea. Robert Merriam. This cannot be the Robert above as his parents were far to old in 1630 to have another child born to them but that appears to be the consensus in several publications despite the illogic of that conclusion. In addition, William Merriam's will lists all of this known children and Mary is not among them. That leads to the possibility she was a blood relation to Mary Sheafe wife to Robert perhaps the daughter of a Sheafe brother or sister although no such daughter has been found to date. None of the brothers of Robert had a daughter Mary that could be her.

What are the sources for her last name at birth?

There are several secondary records with LNAB most claim Merriam. Torrey who has Sheafe? Merriam?/Morrison. The tombstone of husband John Hubbard has wife Mary Merriam. Find A Grave: Memorial #103103080 The Hubbard Genealogy claims Merriam possibly sister to Robert, One thousand years of Hubbard history, 866 to 1895. p 213 The Lowell, MA Vital Records recording John Hubbard's death say the same thing: Massachusetts: Vital Records, 1620-1850 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2016). John Hubbard Death Bond's Genealogies of the Families of Watertown, Massachusetts names John Hubbard brother-in-law to Dea Robert Merriam of Concord. This article in the NEHGR names her either Sheafe or Merriam Merriam Article. I have not discovered which Torrey source indicated Morrison.

She is not the daughter of George Merriam and Susan Raven. In his will proven 4 Apr 1676 he names his 5 daughters Sarah Grove, Elizabeth West, Hannah Axdell, Susan Scotchford and Abigail Bateman. There is no mention of Mary Hubbard or son-in-law and grandchildren as there would be if she had died before George wrote his will. Both of George's daughters named Mary died young, 1628 and 1646 and the birth date of 1625 precedes the marriage of her alleged parents in 1627. She should be detached from these parents. It is not even proven that her LNAB was Merriam.
