MRS. MATILDA BENNETT DEAD

Mrs. Matilda M. Bennett 77 years old, who died Sunday of heart distress at her summer home at Stanhope New Jersey, was a former prominent residence of the village of Canarsie her husband Joseph A. Bennett, is a retired lieutenant of the fire department and widely known among the fireman as the first man a pointed on the Brooklyn force. Mrs. Bennett was born in Manhattan, but I had to live most of her life and Glassboro, for many years in the eastern does this district. She was a member of the Harmonia Chapter No. 34, O.E.S. and of Valley Forge Council, Daughters of Liberty.

Mrs. Bennett was an honest church woman and help greatly and the founding and a building Saint Albans P. E. Church, The rector of which, the Rev. F. G. Stevens will officiate at the funeral services this evening at the residence of her son, 1067 East Ninety-third St. Canarsie. Interment will be at Cypress Hills Cemetery. Mrs. Bennett was survived by her husband and a son George: and a daughter Mrs. Charles Millen and a sister Mrs. Rosabelle Curtis. Mrs. Bennett was a great admirer of The Eagle, which she had read for fifty years.

The New print is hard to read so i tried my best to clear it up. There is some question as to her husbands middle name this has it [ as "A," another his has is "H," ] i would like to know.

Yes it is great grandma Bennet, this hung in an oval frame in Grandma Mellens house forever, & that was a multitude of homes. Matilda was a dry goods store owner on Green St. Bklyn too, she led a band of suffragettes & worked on the underground RR with Henry Ward Beecher.

she was married to Joseph who was the direct descendant of the 1600 Dobbs family. Too, he was the 1st paid NYC fireman. Dec 26 2017?

I meant to attach your excellent profile of Matilda Bennett (Merrick) to my tree and by accident I created a new profile. I am positive that they are the same person. The only thing I added is that she a more specific birth date of April 1842. I can give you references for that if needed.
