Biography
- The birth of James Merrick was recorded in the third quarter of 1854[1]. At this time, his mother's husband had been dead for at least two years, so his father is unknown.
- James was christened by his mother Mary in St. Michael's and All Angels, Penkridge on September 24th, 1854[2]
- In 1871, 18 year old James is living with his mother Mary and step-father in Penkridge where he is working as an agricultural labourer[3]
