Biography

The birth of James Merrick was recorded in the third quarter of 1854[1]. At this time, his mother's husband had been dead for at least two years, so his father is unknown.
James was christened by his mother Mary in St. Michael's and All Angels, Penkridge on September 24th, 1854[2]
In 1871, 18 year old James is living with his mother Mary and step-father in Penkridge where he is working as an agricultural labourer[3]
