Biography

Stephen was a son of Daniel Merrill and Sarah Clough.

Stephen entered an intention of marriage with Dorothy Straw on November 23, 1706 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts[1] The marriage intention took place a few weeks after the birth of their only child Stephen (Jr.). It is not known who raised that child. The marriage was probably not formalized. Some have assumed the child died young, since the father named another child Stephen in 1713 (with Mary Carr). Yet there is no death record. And Dorothy re-married in July of 1707.

Stephen then married Mary Carr on July 10,1710 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts[2]

He died in 1755.[3]

Merrill-142 and Merrill-143 appear to represent the same person because: This additional unknown child (-143) is not mentioned in any of the usual sources, so it appears to be redundant and it is best to merge him together with -142

Merrill-142 and Merrill-452 appear to represent the same person because: same birth date. Vital records of Newbury Vol 1 Page 320 show that Daniel and Sarah are the correct parents for Merrill-452
