Note: Wellington Merrill served in Co. B, 1st Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted for three years at the age of twenty-seven on January 5, 1864, at Milan, Michigan. He was mustered in on January 19, 1864, and discharged on May 28, 1865. He received a gunshot wound to his right thumb during his service.

The 1st Michigan Cavalry was organized on September 13, 1861, at Detroit, Michigan. It was mustered out on March 10, 1866, at Salt Lake City, Utah, where the men were paid and the unit disbanded.

Wellington Merrill was born on December 27, 1835, in New York, one of eight children born to John B. and Bethias (Hogal) Merrill. Wellington's brothers, John and James, also served in the Civil War. James Merrill lived in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. (See the John M. Merrill family story.).

Wellington Merrill married Fannie Buto, who was born about 1845 in Michigan. In 1880, Wellington and Fannie lived at Sheridan, Clare County, Michigan, with daughters Clara L. and Myrtle.

Clara L. Merrill was born in July 1862 in Michigan. She married John W. Runyan on March 20, 1881, at Sheridan, Clare County. John was born in November 1859 in Ohio. In 1900, they lived in Sheridan with children: Nellie E., Duard W., Cleona V., and Fannie E. Runyan. In 1910, their youngest daughter, Fannie, lived with them as did two of their grandchildren, Pearl and Wesley Langworthy. Myrtle Merrill was born in 1872 in Michigan. She married Josiah C. McKinley on January 1, 1888, at Dover, Clare County, Michigan. Josiah was born in 1859 in Ohio to William and Minerva (Brine) McKinley.

In 1900, Wellington was widowed and living in Kalkaska, Michigan, with his nephew William Brockway. Mr. Brockway's mother Emma (Merrill) Brockway was Wellington's sister. Mr. Merrill also spent some time in the Soldiers Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, prior to his death.

Civil War veteran Wellington Merrill died on April 27, 1905, in Kalkaska. He was survived by two children. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska, Michigan, in a lot owned by the G.A.R. A Civil War military headstone and a G.A.R. flag holder mark Mr. Merrill's grave. His brother, John M. Merrill, is also buried in the same lot.
