Andrew Jackson Merritt was born on January 11, 1836 in Alabama. He was the son of John Merritt and Martha Durden.[1] He married Irene Gordon on February 9, 1860 in Autauga County, Alabama. They had one daughter together.[2]
Andrew enlisted in Company K, 1st Alabama Infantry. He was taken as a Prisoner of War at Camp Butler. He died in the camp on May 14, 1862. He is buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois.[3][4][5]
