Hi there;

I just wanted to thank you for posting the profile for Nancy Nichols Magann. My research focus is the Nichols family, looking for the parents of my Rachel Leona Nichols and it was great to find all your hard work online. Thanks again.

In your research on colonial Virginia Merritts, have you come across documents tying them to Brownings? I'm trying to sort out Brownings who have gotten mixed up between Cecil County Maryland and Essex County Virginia, and they seem to have intermarried with Merritts in both places, but much of it is simply undocumented internet genealogy and any reliable sources would be pure gold!

If you would like a new rabbit trail between Major William Marriott of Surry Co. and Essex Co., I offer this one: Mary, daughter of Major William married Samuel Thompson, son of Rev William Thompson. Samuel was named in of his sister's and brother-in-law's estate in Essex County. We know even then people didn't marry at random but stayed in familiar social circles. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thompson-53256

"7 October 1682. Est. of Wm. Marriott, deceased, Dr. to Jno. Moring, Admr. of Mr. Geo. Proctor, Est. Amt, due Mr. Samuel Thompson as marrying ye surviving of ye two orphans, out of which 1500 is to be paid and deducted from funeral charges of the dec'd orphan by order of Ct. Rec.: of Mr. Thompson in right of his wife 9ber 1681, ex. and settled Maj Marriott's estate. Witnesses Wm. Browne, Wm. Edwards.[4]

4 May 1695, Essex Co., VA - Samuel Thompson was named a trustee in the will of Robert Payne/Paine, husband of his sister, Katherine. [5]

1709, Essex Co., VA - Samuel Thompson of Surry Co. gave a power of attorney to John Hawkins and his brother, William Thompson, concerning the land of his sister, Catherine Paine decd., "during the time of the minority of Robert Paine orphan who is now in my care & custody." [6]"

Have been wondering who was formerly involved with the FTDNA Merritt/Marriott project. All the links are dead and there's no admin. Regardless, I'm actively trying to recruit people. My brother and I trace our ancestry to Matthias Marriott of Surry County VA ,died 1707. (No evidence he is the son of Major William Marriott also of the county, so oft repeated. Unless you know something we don't). My brother matches only one other tester in the Merritt/Marriott FTDNA project so far. Both did Big-Y and match closely; our most recent common ancestor is 7 generations back, this Thomas Marriott of Virginia, many of whose descendants eventually settled around Morgan County, Missouri. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Merriott-3. Another line from an earlier generation, John Marriott son of Benjamin Marriott and Mourning Cornwell, went to Greene County TN, descendants to Rhea and Hamilton County, TN, then the large family of John Thompson Marriott went to Arkansas. Benjamin's brother, Matthias Marriott, grandson of the older Matthias, was a sawmill owner at the head of Gray's Creek in Surry Co. VA. Compilation of documents here: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/MatthiasMarriot.html, by a Colonial Williamsburg Foundation historian. So if you run across people from these families, send them our way! DNA confirmation would be great. There are Merritts among the descendants.

But I have 1 friend with Marriot ancestors and she like us understands the variation in spellings. The other friend swares her family's name has always been Merrit but since I wrote that comment I have found out her family was at one time Marriot. Evem Marro. Thank You again.

Looks like we are distant 6th cousins 1x removed to each other.

Your 6th gr-grandparents Thomas Merritt and Winifred are my 5th gr-grandparets !

I come down through their son John Merritt (1784-1854)

You can find my connection at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Merritt-2306 and follow it on down to me.

I left reference on my Thomas Merritt and Winifred page referring to your work.

I'm not at all sure about the merging mechanism on wiki-tree.

Anyhow just wanted to drop in and say Hello! and I'm very impressed and grateful for all the work you have your family have done. I'm still learning how to do alot.

Sincerely, Mrs. Andrea Nelson http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Quick-1090

Michael,

Thanks for answering. Your line of Merritts goes back further than I have been able to trace. So far, I have traced back to late 1700s Keep trying. Duane

Hi Michael,

Have you traced the Merritt line back to England? I am from the Merritts in New York State and believe they came from England. I am looking for more family connections. Duane Merritt

Hi!

How are you? I'm Shirley, a WikiTree Mentor. Hope you're enjoying our site.

How To Use WikiTree is a good starting point, and the Help Index is an important place to find out how to do most tasks.

If you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info. Do you have Royal Ancestors? Rather than create duplicate profiles for them, please contact the EuroAristo Project to discuss connecting your family line to their profiles.

And I'm here to help too, just ask!

Hi! I see you have uploaded your DNA for comparison. Did you know we have a project for DNA where a lot of great new things are happening? If you are interested and would like to check it out, go to the FIND link top right of your profile page, select PROJECTS from the drop down box, and then select the link for the DNA project. It has information listed that might be of interest to you, and feel free to contact any of the members if you would like additional details.

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add Profiles to WikiTree - if you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top right, or head over to the G2G forum and take a minute to introduce yourself in the Tree House. You might also want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

We also have Mentors to help too.

Researching the Merritts of Colonial Virginia, in particular the descendants of James Merritt of Rappahannock County Virginia. James settled near Tappahannock in 1650. His family lived for a century or more there on Mount Landing Creek, then for another century or so near Lynchburg Virginia.
