Death of Charles Merritt

Charles Merritt died on the 4th June, 1947 aged 74 years. This age correlates to our Charles. However, BDM NSW lists his parents as George and Jess, not Bridget.

Merritt and family a farewell. Alderman Up john (Mayor of Tamworth) who presided, spoke in the highest terms of Mr. Merritt and family and of the esteem in which they were hold by all who knew them. Rev Father Mullins made a presentation en behalf of the people of Weabonga, of a beautiful silver tea and coffee service, suitably inscribed, and wished Mr. and Mrs. Merritt and family every prosperity in their new home at Tamworth. Mr. Merritt suitably responded on behalf of his wife and family, and thanked all those present for the beautiful present. Singing and dancing were then indulged in. Mr. Peer Flanders, of Tamworth, presided, at the piano. During the speeches Mr. Upjohn was declared Mayor of Weabonga, and everybody declared themselves. New Staters. Lowcock and King, property salesmen, of Tamworth and Gunnedah, report having sold on account of Mrs. McEwen, her highly Improved property "Rywung," situated at Swamp Oak, and comprising 2952 acres of C.P. lands, the purchaser being Mr. Chas. Merritt, whom they recently sold out at Limbrl. There were also sold with the above property 2800 sheep and an extensive plant. Tho same firm further advised having sold for Mr. J. McEwen his property of 383 acres C.P. in the same direction. Tamworth Daily Observer (NSW : 1910 - 1916), Wednesday 26 May 1915, page 4 NEW STATE CONCERT PARTY AT WOOLLBROOK. The New State concert party, comprising Mr. and Mrs. T Courtney Hood, Misses Maggie Bourke, Rene Merritt, Marjorie Sippel and Phoebe Sheldon and Mr.J. O'Donohue, journeyed to Wool-brook on Anniversary day, and after a picnic under the willows, held a concert at night. There was a crowded and enthusiastic audience. All the artists were in splendid form, and were warmly re-called. Mrs. M. Morgan, a local singer, also assisted. Mr. J. Doods, president of Woolbrook New State League, was in the chair, and at the conclusion, congratulated Mr. Hood upon his enterprise and success. In responding Mr. Hood thanked the audience for their appreciation and referred to the splendid hall, of which the people, were justly proud. He also referred to the New State movement, and was pleased to notice that Woolbrook had a very live League. He reminded them of the big New State conference, to be held at Armidale in April next.
