Biography

Deputy Secretary of War. Married Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Charles Walker of Huntingdon Feb 27, 1787.

He owned land and lived at 'Highlands' House, Spencers Wood (Shinfield Cty, Berkshire) England. "Until the 1860s, Spencers Wood consisted mainly of common land but in 1863 the common land was enclosed and the majority of it was acquired separately by William Merry, who lived at Highlands and Frederick Allfrey, at Stanbury."[1]

In 1817 lived at Lower Gower Street, Bedford Square, Middlesex.

In 1851 William is 80 years old and the head of a household at Landsdown Terrace in Cheltenham. Living there are his son William and wife Anne, and several servants.

Children:

1) William Merry Esq, J.P. Born Nov 19, 1792. Many years Secretary to Viscount Palmerston. Married Anne Mason 1820.

2) Walter Merry (Rev?). Married Elizabeth Byrch. Son William-Walter, and 2 daughters.

3) Mary Amelia Merry. Married James-William Lukin 1815. Died 1816[2].

4) Emily Merry. Married Justice Hagerman of Toronto.
