Disputed Wife

The last name of the wife of Cornelius Merry has been in conflict in online genealogies and histories. The baptism records of their children in the First Church of Christ Congressional in West Hartford list her name as Bethia without including a LNAB.

O'Brien in his article enforms us that "His son, Cornelius, removed to Hartford, Conn., where he married Bethia Baker, by whom he had nine children, the eldest of whom was Cornelius, born at Hartford on November 15, 1702." [1] I have found no primary records to support that Bethia was born as a Baker.

Irwin L. and Isabella G. Merry in their book say that Cornelius Merry of Hartford (No. 2.1.3) married Bethia Morgan. They base this on a deed that names the Cornelius Merry as brother-in-law. (see Parson argument below).[2] I have seen many online genealogies that have his wife as a Bethia Morgan that lived and died in Essex, Massachusetts. I have found no primary records to support that Bethia was born as a Morgan.

Gerald James Parsons in the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol. 148 on pgs. 234-235 in his article "The Early Parsons Families of the Connecticut River Valley" argues that Cornelius Merry married Bethia Williams of Hartford Connecticut. He bases this argument on the fact that Bethia was incorrectly identified as Morgan based on a deed of 17 May 1709 which Thomas Morgan of Hartford deeded land to "my brother in Law Cornelius Merry." Cornelius had a sister named Rachel and that it is more likely that Thomas Morgan married her. The Rachel Merry that married John Baker was the widow of Cornelius Merry Sr. Parsons goes on the assert that "If Bethia, wife of Cornelius Merry, was not Bethia Williams it is difficult to explain why the Merrys should have joined Ebenezer Williams in selling the land of the deceased Francis Williams." [3]

This argument is further strengthened by Dr. Fred Baker when states in his article on the Baker family history that, "There is some confusion in the record concerning which John Baker and which Rachel Merry were actually married. Barbour mistakenly states that John Baker, Jr. , (3. below) married Rachel Merry in 1702, but this is not likely as John, Jr. , had died previously on 26 April 1697. To add to the confusion, Irwin and Isabella Merry state in their 1968 manuscript that Cornelius Merry, Jr.’s sister, Rachel, born on 30 August 1670, married John Baker at Hartford in December 1702." He goes on to say that "However, Parsons refutes the Merry assertion and presents a strong argument that this Rachel Merry actually married Thomas Morgan and that the Rachel Merry who married John Baker, Sr., was the former wife of Cornelius Merry, Sr." [4]

The arguments of Parsons and Baker are quite convincing. Based on the research that Parsons presented in his article in the NEHGR, the correct LNAB for Bethia wife of Cornelius Merry of Hartford is Williams.

Biography

Birth in Northampton, Massachusetts

Cornelius Merry was born in 1666.[5] in Northampton, Massachusetts.[6] to Cornelius Merry and Rachel Ball . Cornelius Merry Sr. and Rachel settled in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1664. [6] [7] [1]

Connecticut Valley Massachusetts.

As stated by Trumbull, the Merry family removed from Northampton to Squawkeage, or what is now Northfield, in the year 1673. There is on record a petition to the General Court of Massachusetts dated May 15, 1672. [1] Trumbull also said of Merry that, "His dwelling house was burned by the indians in 1675, and the town made other grants to compensate him for his losses." [8] "...with the outbreak of King William's war in 1689, Northfield was once more deserted, and her inhabitants, fleeing to a place of safety, found it again at Hadley. Queen Anne's war following in 1702, and continuing until 1713, Northfield remained unsettled and desolate for a period of more than twenty-three years." [9]

Michael O'Brien states in his article Cornelius Merry and Matthew Clesson, Pioneer Irishmen of Northampton, Mass., "His son, Cornelius, removed to Hartford, Conn., where he married Bethia Baker, by whom he had nine children, the eldest of whom was Cornelius, born at Hartford on November 15, 1702. I find, all told, five generations of Merrys, the first born of each family having been named Cornelius. On May 17, 1716, Cornelius Merry of Hartford sold to Robert Cooper of Deerfield for £32, "all the allotments of land in Northfield made to his honored father, deceased, except six acres in Bennett's meadow." [1]

In Temple and Sheldon's History of Northfield there is a description of the lot that Cornelius Merry Sr. received in 1689. Cornelius Jr. and Bethia sold this lot after Cornelius Sr. died in 1716.[1]

[10]

Hartford Connecticut

About 100 Puritans, led by the Rev. Thomas Hooker, created a settlement on the banks of the Connecticut River in June 1636.[11]

In 1638, the General Court (legislative body), meeting in Hartford, adopted the Fundamental Orders, often described as America's first written constitution and the reason why Connecticut's official nickname is the Constitution State. The Orders, inspired in part by Hooker's assertion in a sermon that “the foundation of authority is laid, firstly, in the free consent of the people,” set up an independent government and established Connecticut as a commonwealth.[12] It is not surprising the Cornelius choose to leave Massachusetts for Connecticut considering the treatment that his Irish family had received at the hands of the English.

The first record we find for Cornelius in Connecticut is a land record from Dec. 16, 1698 where he is the Grantee for land purchased from Grantor Thomas Hosmer.[13]

On November 16, 1701 Cornelius buys more land from Stephen Hosmer.[14]

In the Memorial History of Hartford County Cornelius is included as a later settler of Hartford arriving in 1698.[15]
