Biography

Helen was born in 1808, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland . Parents being William Merry and Mary Dunshee. ^[1]

1829 Helen marries William Howie, the marriage was registered in the Parish of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. ^[2]

1841 Residence East Netherton Street, Ayrshire. Helen age recorded as 30 years, her husband William, is about 35 years, occupation is that of a Cotton H L W. Children in the household are Mary age 11, Helen age 11 and William age 2 years. All household members birthplace recorded as Ayrshire. ^[3]

1849 Their daughter Mary marries Alexander Findlay, their marriage was registered in Galston, Ayr.

1851 Address East Netherton, Cunningham, Ayr. Helen age bout 43 years, husband William, age recorded as 45 years, occupation Venetian Weaver. Children in the home are William age 11 years, who is attending School (Scholar) and John age 5 years. ^[4]

Note: Daughter Helen is not in the 1851 Census, she would be about 22 years I believe she is with her grandmother Mary (Wallace) Howie.

1861 Residence Bank Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Helen is about 53 years, William her husband aged 55 years, occupation is now that of a Bank Porter. Children in the household are Helen age 30, occupation Dress Maker and John is 15 years, occupation is that of an Accountants Clerk . All householders birthplace recorded as Ayrshire. ^[5]

1871 Address 38 Bank Street. Helen now about 63 years, husband William is 65 years old and still working as a Bank Porter. Their daughter still at home is Helen Howie age 40, occupation Dress Maker. All household members birthplace Ayrshire. ^[6]

1874 William jnr. marries Dorothy Hall, their marriage was registered in the District of Park, Lanark.

1880 Their daughter Helen marries Henry Jackson, marriage was registered in Kilmarnock. Ayrshire.

1881 Address 7 Lindsay Street, Kilmarnock. Helen age 73, her husband William is now about 75 years, occupation recorded as Annuitant , formerly a Bank Porter. Birthplace for the couple recorded as Ayrshire. ^[7]

1881 Whilst the family are in Craigielea, Kilmalcom, her husband William, died at the age of 75 years, his occupation was recorded as a retired Bank Messenger, cause of death was due to Acute Meningitis which he suffered with for 1 day and Apoplexy 8 hours. Son, William was the informant and present at death. ^[8]

1891 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Helen is about 83 years. Her daughter Ellen aka Helen is recorded as the Head of the household, she is 60 years old. Also in the home is Mary Howie Auld, grand nice, age 7 and attending School ( Scholar) and Catherine McMurray, age 15 years, domestic servant. All household members birthplace recorded as Ayrshire. ^[9]

1894 Helen age 86 years died, cause of death recorded as Debility from age, 3 months. The widow of William Howie . Her usual residence 3 Bank Street, Kilmarnock. Father William Merrie , occupation Cabinet Maker, Mother Mary m.s. Dunshee Merrie . Informant was her son Wm Howie, of Craigielea Kilmalcolm. ^[10]
