Biography

John was born about 1805. He lived for many years in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, married and raised a large family there. He reportedly "went West" and his place of death is not known.

He may be identical to the John Merryman b. 1800 in Allegheny County who is buried at Fairview Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Masonville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

John's wife was named Mary (maiden name not known). 1850 Census records tell us they had the following children, all born in Pennsylvania:

3. Daniel Mariman Male 13 [b. 1837]
4. Rebecca Mariman Female 11 [b. 1839]
5. Catherine Mariman Female 8 [b. 1842]
6. Nancy Mariman Female 5 [b. 1845]
7. John Mariman Male 1 [b. 1849]

If John Merriman of Clearfield County is identical to the John Merryman buried at Masonville, then he married a second time to a woman named Julianne Moser, and they had a son named James P. Merryman in 1851.

The records suggest John is a descendant of the Merryman family of Baltimore, Maryland, and specifically a grandson of William Merriman Jr. (1756 - 1844), a soldier who fought in the American Revolution. But the exact lineage has not been established yet.
