Biography

Andrew was born in 1764 in Staten Island, New York, one of the five sons of John Mersereau and Gertrude Charity Van Horn. His father was a Loyalist who evacuated from New York to New Brunswick in 1783. Andrew accompanied his father into New Brunswick's interior, away from the crowds of refugees at St. John. They settled at Maugerville, (pronounced Majorville), a small community southeast of Fredericton, along the St. John River. The family of Richard Bartlett had moved to nearby Burton around 1779 and daughter Elizabeth Bartlett married Andrew Mersereau in September 1788 in Maugerville. The couple had 13 or 14 children (Find A Grave suggests a younger male child than Jacob and this child does not appear in Mersereau Genealogy). They both died after George Mersereau was born in 1811 but Find A Grave claims Andrew died in 1852. There's no stone; perhaps there were Cemetery records. He was buried at Christ Church Anglican Cemetery in Maugerville.
