William Loyd Mertz was born June 27, 1896 in Wellesley, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His parents were John Mertz (1861-1933) and Isabella Greenwood (1861-1935). He left Ontario in about 1906 and travelled west to Saskatchewan with his parents. His Dad took out a patent for land south of Humboldt, SK in the R.M. of Wolverine. Together the family broke up the land and farmed it for years. Loyd served in Canadian forces in WWI. His regiment number was 3353213. After the war he returned to farm with his parents and three younger brothers. In the 1950's he moved to Ontario.
