Suit Reveals Domestic Scandal That Will Stir All Central California
With the arrival in San Francisco yesterday of a deputy sheriff of Sutter county, returning from Pismo Beach, near San. Luis Obispo, where he had just served an injunction in connection with a suit for divorce brought by Mrs. Angie Johnston of Yuba City; against Robert L. Johnston, have come to light the details of a family scandal that will stir all central California, where the principals are well known. It is a tale of an erring husband, a runaway girl and a shattered romance that has broken two happy homes and brought an aged father to tho brink of his grave.
Ten days ago the Johnston divorce suit was taken into the courts at Yuba City and placed on secret file by Judge K. S. Mahon of Sutter county, and so zealously has the secret of its existence been guarded that not the slightest hint of the circumstances surrounding its inception has leaked out. The suit alleges cruelty and Infidelity on the part of Johnston, and the strangest part of the complaint Is that Mrs. Johnston names hen own beautiful, young sister. Miss Marian Metcalf, as the woman who has robbed her of her husband's love.
MARIAN METCALF MISSED
Mrs. Johnston is a daughter of James Metcalf, a wealthy farmer living near Marysvllle; and was married about 12 years ago to Robert L Johnston, a well known cattleman, whose Interests in central California are extensive. They have one daughter and are well known In San Francisco, where they have been frequent visitors. About 12 months ago Marian Metcalf, Mrs. Johnston's younger sister disappeared suddenly from her home in the north, creating a sensation that set all Yuba and Sutter counties agog with excitement. For several weeks nothing was heard from Marian Metcalf and then her father received a letter from her, written in Los Angeles, in which she declared that she had become tired of a quiet home life, longed to travel and see the world, and would be on her way to the Philippines as a Red Cross nurse by - the time her letter reached him. Suspecting that all was not well, Metcalf set out in search of his daughter, but a heartbreaking hunt throughout southern California failed to give him a single clew as to her whereabouts.
FINDS ERRING DAUGHTER When the search had been all but given up as hopeless Metcalf received word that his daughter had been seen at Angiola, in Tulare county. Hurrying to that place Metcalf began quietly to investigate and soon learned that a man named Johnston was building a magnificent home at Pismo beach, near San Luis Obispo, and that Johnston and his wife were there superintending the work. The man was found by Metcalf to be Robert L. Johnston, the husband of his eldest daughter, and the woman who was known In the vicinity as Johnston's wife was the long lost younger daughter, Marian. Marian Metcalf had gone to Angiola when her father discovered Johnston, and Metcalf returned to his home without her. Investigation showed that for a year Johnston has been living a dual life with the two sisters, spending a portion of the time with his wife at Yuba City and then returning south to Join her sister, whose secret departure from her home a year ago was for the express purpose of joining him. Johnston and Marian Metcalf had planned to continue the strange dual life, and the latter was to be the mistress of the magnificent new mansion at Pismo Beach.
'"WIFE ALMOST PROSTRATED : Stricken by the news of her husband's infidelity and her sister's shame, Mrs. Johnston has been all but prostrated at her home in Sutter county, and her father is in a critical condition. Mrs. Johnston's suit for divorce names her sister as corespondent and makes the formal allegations of cruelty and infidelity. She has had all her husband's interests attached in order to prevent the possibility that he might transfer his property to her sister and to keep her from securing a share of his wealth, and agents have been busily engaged looking up titles and filing the necessary papers. Johnston has as yet filed no answer to his wife's suit, but it is expected that the case will be bitterly contested, and that the possible appearance of Marian Metcalf as a witness when it is called to trial will provide a sensation of startling proportions.
