Native American Roots Posted 21 May 2017 by Jeri Forsha Amelia; a Catawba-Cherokee born in 1745 in Ansonville, Anson County, North Carolina, United States married William Medcalf (Revolutiony War veteran) in North Carolina in 1763 and died at their home in North Carolina in 1805. Their son Joel Medcalf (War of 1812 veteran) would marry Elisabeth 'Betsy' Purser on Jan 19, 1797 in Mecklenburg, NC. She was 1/4 Cherokee; born Jan 17, 1781 in Mecklenburg; died sometime after 1840 in Greene County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Revolutionary War veteran John Purser, whose mother, Massey White, was a full-blood Cherokee from Tennessee. Joel and Betsy's daughter, Mary “Polly” Metcalf Miller (1796-1856; my 3rd great grandmother) had ancestry from two different Cherokee tribes. Her son Solomon Miller (a Civil War Confederate veteran) would lead a wagon train to Montana in 1864 and marry one of the participant's of that wagon train (Annie Yates- daughter of “Grannie” Yates) later that same year in Virginia City, Montana.
