Biography
Helen, known as Ellen, was born[1] and baptised in 1852 in Beverley, Yorkshire, England,[2] where she lived with her parents, John Metcalfe and Elizabeth Hall.[3]
At the time of the 1871 census Ellen worked as a cook for the Munroe family in Beverley.[4]
Ellen married Peter Long in Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire, in 1877.[5][6] In 1881 they lived at 12 Waltham Terrace, Beverley, and Peter worked as a stonemason.[7]
Peter died in 1889.[8] In 1891[9] and 1901 Ellen and her children lived at 22 Waltham Terrace; she worked as a charwoman and laundrywoman.[10] By 1911 they had moved to 4 Waltham Terrace and Ellen worked as a housekeeper.[11]
