Fauquier Co. formed from Prince William Co. 1759.]

Marriage to Sabina or Sybil FARROW: (9,33) (3a,9b) Sally. (5,30) Sabina FARRAR of MD. (1a) Sabina FARROW of MD. (35) Sabina FARRAR. (1) ca.1745. [NOTE: If Sybil was b. ca. 1738, she would have been only age 7 in 1745.] (1) Probably Fauquier Co., VA.

Marriage to Mary O'BRIEN: (1,3a,9,33) (2) O'BRYAN, O'BRIEN, or O'BANNON. (1a,30,35) Mary O'BRIEN of VA. [NOTE: John METCALFE's 1st wife Sybil was living 28 Oct 1776, and John had son Thomas by wife 3rd wife Rhoda 20 Mar 1780. Census records & her tombstone put Hannah METCALFE's birth to 2nd wife Mary between 1772 and 1776. If all births were legitimate and John had wives Sybil, Mary and Rhoda in that order, Sybil would have had to have died in Nov or Dec 1776 or 1777, and John married Mary in 1777 or early 1778 and had daughter Hannah in 1778 or early 1779, then married Rhoda by early to mid 1779. If Hannah was born between 1772 and 1776, she was probably illegitimate or born to wife Sybil.]

Marriage to Rhoda DENT: (1a,3a,5,30,33,35) Widow of Eli CHINN. (5,33) Sarah "Sally" (DENT) CHINN. (7a) Although she had children by Eli CHINN, Rhoda was never married to him. (36a) Sally.

Burial: (5) Buried on his farm in Nicholas Co., KY. (9b) Capt. John METCALFE and wife Sally buried in the old cemetery in Jefferson, 12th St., Louisville, KY, now known as Baxter Square, he being a Rev. soldier. (30) His remains and those of his last wife were removed to Carlisle Cemetery in 1889. [NOTE: His wives Sybil and Mary probably died and were buried in VA, and his wife who d. in KY was Rhoda. Someone probably mistook his daughter-in-law Salley PICKETT METCALFE for his wife. Source 26a says that Sally was buried "by the side of her grandfather on the old farm, until W.P. BRUCE moved the bones to Carlisle, KY Cemetery." If she was instead buried beside her father-in-law, who would have been her children's grandfather, and then BRUCE moved both their graves so they again were side by side, this may account for the confusion. There is no grave for either John or Sally in Carlisle Cemetery Records. Perhaps BRUCE thought John ought to be buried in a more public cemetery among Revolutionary Soldiers, and mistook Sally's grave for that of his wife because of its location and so had it moved, too.]

(7l) 1784, 23 Jan: Land survey No. 7580 for John METCALF, 2,972 acres in Fayette Co., KY on Licking. (33c) Maysville [formerly Limestone, KY] was the crossing place of the multitude of bison on their way to the salt springs, known as Blue Licks, 24 miles to the south. These migrants beat down a wide path known as the Buffalo Trace. And connecting with the other animal paths at the licks, the crossing, when white men came upon the scene, was the natural entrance to the interior of Kentucky. This fact explains why BOONE and KENTON and their less advertised companions were quick to stake out lands at this point for themselves and their clients at the very beginning of the influx of settlement.

"The Washington Post" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/books/chap1/lifeinblackandwhite.htm) states that soil infertility in Loudoun Co., VA contibuted to problems with the economy, which may have contributed to large numbers of settlers from the area emigrating to KY. "Farmers who invested in tobacco cultivation during the eighteenth century routinely used inefficient or few soil conservation methods, systematically mapping land of its fertility. Only occasionally did they allow a field to lie fallow long enough to replenish its vital nutrients, or routinely use fertilizer. 'The value of manure is not known here,' Nicholas CRESSWELL commented in 1777. 'If it is, they are too lazy to make use of it. Their method is to clear a piece of land from the woods, generally put it in wheat the first year, Indian corn the next, and so alternately for six or seven years together.' After that, farmers would complain that 'the strength of the Land is gone ... it is worn out,' and they let it grow into woods again while clearing another tract for cultivation. This kind of negligence carried over to the next generations. Loudoun's nineteenth-century farmers witnessed a steady decline in soil fertility and crop yields land prices continued to rise sharply. The county's economy began to recover by 1840, partially because of changing land-use techniques."]

(3a) The family was "poor and humble". (3b) Had "limited finances." (5) He owned a good many slaves and left his wife and five children well provided for, and was held in high esteem by everybody. [NOTE: It seems unlikely that he was "poor and humble" since he bought and sold so much property.]

(1a,5) He possessed a large and well selected library of all the standard English works of his day and gave his children advantages not common in that day. (1a) A man who detested gaming, racing and all manner of dissipation; inclined to sterness in his intercourse with men, a student given more to the pursuit of knowledge than the pursuit of gain.

All his stock furniture and plantation utensils to go in the same manner. He claims a birth order, at least for the older sons: "Charles the oldest... Uncle William... My father comes next in order... Next to my father comes Uncle Cristopher... James of whom I have already spoken comes next. Then comes Ely... Uncle Ila... My father's 3 own sisters were Mary who married a Mr. ROGERS, Elizabeth married a MOORE, Nancy married John DAVIS of Aunt ROGERS' family."

(1a) 1889, Jun: Bela M. HUGHES of Denver, CO wrote a letter which lists slightly different children in a different order, but also does not claim any particular order of birth. "John METCALFE... died in 1799, leaving his widow (his third wife) in his homestead with her children, namely: Thomas, Bela, Sarah Lucy, and my mother, Rhoda Dent... his youngest daughter. The last wife of that John METCALFE was the widow of Eli CHINN of Virginia, and a daughter of Robert DENT, of Prince George, MD. ... The John Medcalf/Metcalf listed in Eckenrode's book is for a different man from Jefferson County, Virginia [WV] who died early in the war.

Metcalf-525 and Metcalfe-1372 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates with DOB, DOD and locations the same. Will take some work to sort this one, I think.
