George was born about 1735 and christened on 5 April 1735 at Everton, Nottinghamshire[1]. He was the son of George Metcalfe and Mary Crampton.
In 1765, at All Saints Gainsborough, George married Rebecca, daughter of Robert Morehouse and Mary Elizabeth Sowden[2].
George and family moved to 11 Market Place, Spalding from Gainsborough in 1775. At the time he was described variously as a Grocer, Wholesale Grocer, Chandler, Liquor Merchant and Wholesale Victualler[3][4].
George, describing himself as a gentleman of Spalding, executed his will on 20 February 1812. He made his wife Rebecca his executrix and she proved the will on 24 November 1813 at Spalding, Lincolnshire. In the will be mentions his wife Rebecca, sons: Charles, John, Morehouse and daughter, Rebecca. Also mentioned is his obligations to his grandson Robert Ives Metcalfe and his mother, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Denton Metcalfe. It would appear that son Robert has died before this date. He also mentions his sister-in-law Amy Morehouse, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire (now deceased)[5].
George passed away in 1813[6] and was buried on 6 August at St Mary and St Nicolas, Spalding, Lincolnshire[7].
From his will, it would appear that George was quite wealthy, and owned a number of tenements and houses. He also owned the 'Hole in the Wall' public house and brewery, as well as land in the fens in the village of Cowbit, about 3 miles away[5].
