John Metcalfe was born on January 26, 1800, in York, Yorkshire, England, the son of Elisabeth and James. He married Bridget Gladwise Matthews on July 14, 1846, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. They had six children in 17 years. He died on September 5, 1867, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 67.
