Biography

Best[1] identifies Samuel, b.c.1645, as the son of Michel Meyer and Anna (Hess) Meyer. He was a Mennonite leader and school master in 1685, and in 1709 signed a letter in the German Palatinate as one of the Mennonite leaders. He was living at Reihen in 1717, and was still alive in 1722. Best notes that in 1724 he was described as "a poor farmer who had a hard life', but does not indicate where this description was found.

Birth : Best[1] notes that Samuel's father, Michel, left Schleitheim between 1642 and 1652. It is possible that Samuel was born in Schleitheim, but not confirmed.

Marriage and children : Marriage records from Bockschaft, Baden (Baden-Württemberg), Preußen, give that Samuel Meyer (son of Michel Meyer) married Anna Engelerin (daughter of Hans Engeler) on 8 Feb 1676 in the parish of Reihen. [2][3][1]

Best[1] identifies two sons who she believes were born to Samuel and Anna :

  1. Michael b.c.1677, d.aft.1751 Lancaster, PA
  2. Samuel b.c.1682, d.c.1755 Lancaster, PA

Death : Best notes that Samuel died after 1722, although gives no evidence for this; since Anna, his wife, died on 28 Nov 1722 in Reihen, it's assumed that Samuel was named as being still alive at that time.

Notes

Original profile gives death date as 2 Apr 1719 in Reihen, which is believed to be the date of death for Samuel's brother, Hans, and which conflicts with Best[1]. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, the date from Best is assumed to be correct.

Original profile records wife's surname as Hess, which conflicts with Best[1]. Evidence needed to clarify.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Meyers-87 and Meyer-1254 are not ready to be merged because: Meyers-87 is an orphaned, unsourced profile with no information other than that he had a daughter Anna Magdalena from Reihm Heidelberg, Baden, maybe intended to be Reihen 74889 Sinsheim. Her profile is also unsourced, with no information other than that she was the wife of John Henry Baer (abt.1688-bef.1738). There is no evidence at all that he had a wife named Anna Magdalnea Meyers, and I'd like to disconnect her as Henry Baer's wife. Merging Meyers-87 and Meyer-1254 seems like it would be a step towards reducing confusion in the Meyer and Bear family records.

Meyers-87 and Meyer-1254 do not represent the same person because: Birthdates are different. It seems more likely that the unsourced Meyers-87 is intended to be the same person as Meyer-2809, which records the same birth details for Samuel and locates him in Reihen. (Locating him in Reihen is probably a conflation of Meyer-2809 with Meyer-1254, but that's a separate issue.)
