Biography

Anna[ Meyer-8992 was born in 1904 and was the daughter of Andries Marthinus Meyer. Anna was my Aunt and the sister of my father Cornelius Johannes Janse van Vuuren Meyer. She passed away circa 1970 in Adelaide, Eastern Cape, South Africa. I have fond memories when I was sent to live with my Aunt Anna and Uncle Randell at a very young age at their home in Market street, Adelaide, Eastern Cape. Uncle Randal Herselman-111 was the Manager of Standard Bank in Adelaide and was also a Angora farmer in the Tarkastad area somewhere past the Three Sisters mountains. Aunty Anna was very strict and today I still remember when sitting at her dining room table telling me to "Waffel arems af die tafel" Every Sunday morning we went to church, which was followed with a delicious Sunday roast lunch and afterwards "dit was slaap tyd"- no playing, running around or making any noise until "And Eeter"or Supper time! Tough to do when you are young!

To this day I still have the most fondest memories when at a very early age (5 or 6) years staying on Uncle Randells farm, playing with the African (Xhosa) workers children (Quideens (Teenager's) and Piccaneens) taut to shoot with his .333 German mauser rifle, hunting Dassies, Guinea fowl, taut to harden my feet and walk barefoot in the bush like them, seeing Ardvarks, Porcupines, Meerkats, Spingboks, Kudos and large heards of Angora goats, sheep and Afrikander cattle and of course a Rondavel full of hanging Biltong, Droowors Lamb and Beef. In those early days there was no electricity, instead paraffin lamps were used at night, hot water was provided by heating water on a huge log burning Agfa stove and I was made to bath in a copper tub filled with hot water and overseen that I washed properly by an african cook maid and a mother of the African children I played with. The kitchen always had a wonderful aroma of Koffie brewing, bread, cakes being baked, meelipap or maltabella cooking and meat frying and Boerewors being home-made to eat or to be dried for Droowors.

Also as there were no refrigerators back then,"Kool kasser" were used to keep milk, butter and cream all of which was produced on the farm- No popping out to a shop as nearest town was either Tarkastad or Queenstown miles and miles away.

Anna was born about 1904. She was the daughter of Andries Meyer and Anna van Vuuren. She passed away about 1965.
