Biography

John was baptised as John Mitchell on 5 November 1757, Gwinear, Cornwall, son of Thomas Mitchell and Ursula.[1]

John married Grace Rodda on 25 February 1775 in Gwinear, Cornwall.[2] [3] Together they had the following children:

  1. John Michell, son of John & Grace, was baptised on 7 May 1775 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[4][5] Baptised 3 months after the couple got married
  2. Henry Michell, son of John & Grace, was baptised on 29 December 1776 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[6][7] Henry died age 2 ¼, the cild of John & Grace, was buried on 10 April 1779 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[8][9]
  3. Grace Michell, child of John & Grace, was baptised on 26 January 1779 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[10][11] Grace died as the infant from variolis(smallpox), child of John & Grace, was buried on 29 March 1779 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[12][13]
  4. Henry Michell, son of John & Grace, was baptised on 18 February 1780 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[14][15]
  5. Grace Michell, child of John & Grace, was baptised on 14 July 1782 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[16][17] Grace aged 20, daughter of John & sister of Jane (who was buried 26 July) was buried on 8 August 1802 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[18]
  6. William Mitchell, son of John & Grace, was baptised on 4 July 1784 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England.[19]
  7. Thomas Michel/Michell, son of John & Grace, was baptised on 7 May 1786 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England. [20] [21]

Research Notes

Deaths from variolis(smallpox) in the family Three children from the family of John Michell [& Grace Rodda] died of variolis(smallpox) in 1802 that we know are related from the burial records:

There is a fourth Michell that died of died of variolis(smallpox) in 1802 in Gwinear, currently there is no evidence that the above three siblings are also related to John Michell, despite having the same surname and coming from the same place. It is thought that this John Michell is the son of John Michell [& Ann Curnow] A review of the Gwinear parish registers show that a lot of people were dying of variolis during this period.

A possible extra child: John Michell baptised 5 Jan 1777 in Gwinear, Cornwall.[41] Originally it was postulated that this John was baptised after the other John MICHELL (b 7 May 1775) had died. However, no burial has been located for John Michell to support his death. That this John is not a child of John Michell & Grace Rodda is further supported by the timing of his baptism. John Michell & Grace Rodda’s children were baptised close to their birth dates which means that the baptism of Henry Michell (bap 29 Dec 1776) [42] & John Michell (bap.5 Jan 1777) is too close for them to be siblings, as there is only a one month gap.
