Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Michener was born 25 Jun 1656 to Robert Michener and Elizabeth Michener in the parish of Ash of Normandy, Surrey, England [1].

John, child of Robard, was baptised on 25 June 1656 in Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England.[2]

Robert was noted as the father of John in a Christening record for 7 AUG 1685.[3]

John was a Quaker and is reported to have been a "bondsman"[citation needed] in the home of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Like many Quakers, he was a victim of the religious intolerance of mid-seventeenth century England. As a young man, he appears briefly in Besse's "Collection of Sufferings of the People Called Quakers" in September of 1684 due to his arrest with several others for attending a Quaker Meeting for Worship in Cowfold, Sussex [4].

In the minutes of Dorkham and Horshing Monthly Meeting of Friends (available in the Friends Library, London), John appears along with his bride-to-be Sarah Moore on the 9th of the 4th month (June under the Julian Calendar then in use), 1686: "This day John Mitchonor & Sarah Moore of Warminghurst did declare their Intentions of taking Each other to husband & wife & the [said] John did produce A few Lines under his father’s hand that gave his [blessing to] the fair Sarah having no parents no Guardian whereupon this meetting doth desire Jo. Shaw and Jo. Doane to make Enquiry Concerning their [clearness] from all others on the Account of Marriage & to give their [report] to the next meeting." John married Sarah Moore, 05 Aug 1686, in the home of William Penn, Warminghurst, Sussex, England (and this was the only marriage solemnized at the Manor).[5] His wife, Sarah, who was orphaned at age 12, was taken into the Penn household where she is variously reported either to have been a ward or a servant girl to the Penns. At the time of the wedding, William Penn, Sr. was apparently in the low countries recruiting settlers to Pennsylvania, but the name of his wife, Guilielma Maria (Springett) Penn appears in the middle of the transcribed wedding certificate, as do the names of their daughter, Laetitia Penn (immediately beneath that of her mother), and their son, Will Penn, Jr. (in the upper right).

John married Sarah Moore on 6 August 1686 in Warminghurst, Suss, England.[6]

It is reported that the young couple set sail for America soon after their marriage, with a letter from Penn to his manager asking that he support them in becoming established in their new home. Their first child, Sarah, was born in Philadelphia 24 April, 1687. In 1715 the Micheners took up land about a mille east of Willow Grove in Moreland Township of what is now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and in 1716 they were founding members of Horsham Friends Meeting. John was appointed one of the first overseers of the meeting in 1717 [7].

John and Sarah's children and their births were noted in the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting Minutes.[8]

There were seven Michener children born to John and Sarah Michener: Sarah (Michener) Palmer, then the twins of Hannah Michener and Rebecca Michener, then Mary MIchener (documentation shows that Mary passed away before William was born - so she passed pre-DEC 1696)**, then William Moore Michener Sr and then another set of twins, Elizabeth (Michener) Pennington and John MIchener Jr.**

John passed away 27 Mar 1735, in Moreland Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Possible [JHS]': John, child of John, was born on 11 FEB 1655 (translated up to 1655 from 1654 due to double date) in Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England.(translation states "baptized" but is easily read as "borne".)[9]

John, child of Robard***, was baptised on 25 JUN 1656 in Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England.[10]

John MIchener was part of a group called Quakers that were often persecuted in England at the time. Excerpt from Besse's A Collection of sufferings of the People called Quakers mentioning the arrest of Michener for attending Friends meeting that occurred in September of 1684. [11]

John married Sarah Moore on 5 August 1686 in Warminghurst, Sussex, England. Warminghurst Manor was the home of William Penn [12] and John was supposed to have been a bondservant to him.[13]

Sources are needed. I would source the marriage first, this is very great, and needs to be sourced. I did a quick check, locating the most correct William Penn, using Penn-40. Michener-4 had in data field, death as about 27 Mar 1715, Bucks Co., PA, and in the Bio narrative has died 1765. Michener-147 had died 1765. Further research is needed to pin down the correct date and location, and source.

Category change (attempted 10 DEC 21): Hicksite Monthly Meeting was the forerunner to the Horsham Monthly Meeting as determined by Bryn Mawr College but WikiTree won't allow the change as Hicksite (or Pre-Hicksite) isn't on an approved list yet - it generates a "suggestion" of improper category. I have filed a category request form for Hicksite MM (9 DEC 2021 - (Stradling-375)).

Possible [JHS]: Found on the same manuscript page as the baptism but is very easily read. Noted and referenced here for possible use . . didn't want to loose the reference. Noted that the father's name was John but most of the verifiable information states that Robert was John's father.

      • I've filed a notice of "issue" with Ancestry.com regarding their translation of John's father's name on the day of his baptism. It is apparent from reading further down the manuscript (at another "Robert") that his father's name is Robert, not Robard. . . will wait to hear.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

There's several items in this bio that needs to be removed & corrected. Starting with "John was in a record that denotes his middle name as beginning with a "T" and his son, John, with an "H.[9]" Have you looked at this record?

It's for a John H son of John T & Sarah that died in 1972!! Our John in his records has NO middle name.

"John passed away 27 Mar 1735, in Moreland Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania." Where's the source for this?

"John was mentioned in a record in the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester, Pennsylvania when he requested a certificate for himself and Sarah, his wife, to Kennett Friends Meeting [further West of Philadelphia].[15]" Again have you looked at this record? It's for a John & Sarah & it's clearly dated 1808!!

"Mary was mentioned in a record regarding John's last will & testament.[16]" This Will was for John & Sarah's grandson John-son of William Michener & Mary Custer-https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Michener-181

"Marriage: "Millennium File". Ancestry Record 7249 #101510613 (accessed 14 January 2022)" Millennium files are NOT reliable. It's made up from different people's family trees. This record states John was born in 1663 & died in 1765 making him 102 yrs old when he died!!

As for his being the son of Robert of Ash, Surrey? I doubt it. There was a Robert Michener who died in 1704 in Worplesdon, England & was a Quaker. Anna Sutherland in her book thought that John was the son of Robert & Elizabeth because they were Quakers.

It's much more likely that John's parents were Henry Michener & Eleanor. They had a son John who was baptised on Jun 24, 1665 at Arundel, Sussex. Arundel, Sussex is 12 miles from Warminghurst, Sussex where John married Sarah Moore on Aug. 5, 1686.

Name John Mitchenor Gender Male Baptism Date 24 Jun 1665 Baptism Place Arundel,Sussex,England Father Henry Mitchenor Mother Eleanor

I have no proof but it makes better sense that being from Surrey. Also there are death records for John Michener of Ash, Surrey-one John Michener was buried on Nov 27, 1671 at Ash, St. Peter, Surrey & another John Michener was buried on Dec 25, 1697 at Ash, St. Peter, Surrey. One of these 2 was probably the son of Robert who was baptised on Jun 25, 1656 at Ash, St. Peter, Surrey. Name John Michener Event Type Burial Death Date abt 1671 Burial Date 27 Nov 1671 Burial Place Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England

Name John Michner Event Type Burial Death Date abt 1697 Burial Date 25 Dec 1697 Burial Place Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England

Name John Michaner Event Type Baptism Baptism Date 25 Jun 1656 Baptism Place Ash, St Peter, Surrey, England Father Robard Michaner

Therefore I believe that Robert & Elizabeth should be disconnected as John's parents. Also in the 1958 book Micheners in America by Anna Sunderland she discussed John & Sarah in the preface & on pages 1-14. The only records she could find regarding their deaths was John Michener died in 1765 & Sarah Michener died in 1757. (NOTE-These records could be for a different John & Sarah). If this was John's date of death he would be 100 when he died. The last record of them was a land deed dated 1747.

Hi, I recommend that you inquire with the Quakers Project for your category for Hicksite meeting. Categorization currently has no "experts" in Quaker categories and we would not know how to set up the category.https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Religious_Society_of_Friends The leaders listed should be able to help you with this.

Thanks, Natalie, Categorization Project

Michener-147 and Michener-4 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same, same birth date, death dates are different, same spouse. All other information makes them the same person.
