Biography

Benjamin Franklin Michtom born the 31st of July 1901 born in Brooklyn, New York. Benjamin served as Chairman of the board for Ideal Toy Company. Died Nov. 1980 in New York. Benjamin was survived by his wife Hadassah (Feil) Michtom and his son Mark Michtom.

  • His father developed the 'Teddy Bear'.[2]
  • Fact: Residence (1 June 1925) Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States
  • From Lakeland obituary...: Joined Ideal Toy Co. in 1921, after college graduation. Became VP of Sales & Marketing, w/ a focus on merchandising the dolls. He became Chairman of Ideal Toy Co. in 1938; from 1970-1978 (when he retired), he was co-chairman with Abraham Katz. He realized that dolls based on comic strip characters and stars such as Shirley Temple became immediately popular.
He also introduced scented dolls, a doll that drank water, and one w/ a permanent wave & Paris dresses. He also introduced themes in the company's dolls such as racial understanding and appreciation of motherhood.
