Biography

Emily F. (Michtom) Rosenstein was born on the 12th of September 1893 in New Jersey.[1] Her parents were Morris Michtom and Rose "Rosa" (Katz) Michtom.[2][3] They lived in Brooklyn, New York in 1905 and she attended school there with her older brother Joseph.[2]

Emily was living with her family on Winthrop Street in 1920.[1] She was working at a publishing company in the bustling city of New York.[1] Her father's teddy bears had become quite popular and her cousin Abraham Katz worked with him in the growing business.[1] Emily met David Rosenstein and married him on the 20th of April 1921 in Manhattan, New York.[3] Emily was twenty-seven while David was twenty-six.[3] Nine years later Emily and David were living next door to her parents on Winthrop Street in Brooklyn.[4] David (40) was working as a Salesman for a dry goods company while Emily (35) took care of the home and family.[4] Their eight year old son Paul attended school while five year old Eleanor was not quite old enough.[4] Christina Lallinger (29) lived with them and worked as their maid.[4]

In 1940 they had moved to a home on Parade Place.[5] David (44) was working for her father's company as an Executive.[5] Emily (46) took care of the home and family.[5] Their children Paul (18) and Eleanor (15) both attended school.[5] Their maid at that time was Mary Posorco, of Italy.[5] The past few years had been rough on Emily. Her mother died three years before at the age of seventy.[6] Her father died almost one year later, at sixty-eight years of age.[7][8] Both were laid to rest in the Montefiore Cemetery. Emily was very active in the group Women's ORT [9] and spoke before various Jewish groups.[10]

By 1950 the children had grown and moved out on their own. Emily traveled with David as he conducted business. In 1951 David and Emily returned from a trip to Rotterdam, Netherlands arriving in New York on the 1st of September.[11] Their journey aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam was seven days long.[11] The following year they took a shorter trip (six days long) aboard the luxurious Queen Elizabeth. That trip took them home from Southampton in the United Kingdom via France.[12]

Emily died on the 19th of February 1956 at the age of sixty-two.[13][14] David died on the 8th of May 1963, having not yet reached the age of sixty-eight.[15][16] He was laid to rest in the Montefiore Cemetery with her and her parents.[16]

Research Notes

  • Her father developed the 'Teddy Bear'.
  • Fact: Residence (1910) Brooklyn Ward 29, Kings, New York, United States
  • Her 1910 census says born in New York (with her brother Joseph born in New Jersey) while her 1920 census says she was born in New Jersey. Her 1930 & 1940 census records say New York and New Jersey, respectively. As her passport and her SSDI records show New Jersey as the birth place I have changed her birth location from New York to Essex, New Jersey.(Silva-1055 17:51, 14 October 2019 (UTC))
  • David is said to have died May 1963 in New York City
  • Video of the Queen Elizabeth Leaving Southampton

  • There is an 1893 Birth Record for an Amelia Michtom, 12 Sep 1893, Father: Maurice Michtom, Mother: Rose Cohen. I believe this is hers and the names were transcribed incorrectly. I can't see the original record without going to an LDS center.
  • Emily and her husband David were both mentioned, along with her brothers, in the Legal Notice her father's lawyer published after her death, regarding two probate items.[17]
  • Emily's middle initial was F but she went by Emily M. (Michtom) Rosenstein after she married.
