Turfit was born sometime before he was baptised on the 26 Jan 1838, at St Mary and the Holy Rood in Donington in Holland, Lincolnshire, England. ^[1]

In 1841 Turfit was recorded as a 3 year old in the household of his father James at Browntoft Lane, Donington, Lincolnshire, England with his mother Mary and his younger sister Harriet.^[2]

Turfit was 15 when he migrated with his parents and three (3) younger siblings to the Colony of New South Wales on the Fortune, arriving 2 May 1853.^[3]

Turfit married Mary Ann Morris on 27 September 1858 at East Maitland, New South Wales. ^[4]

In 1858 Turfit was recorded as a carrier at Dungog.^[5]

He passed away on 11 January 1888 at his residence at Bendolba, Williams River. ^[6] He was buried in the Dungog General Cemetery.^[7] He was held in high esteem by his local congregation, the board of which voted to send a letter of condolences to his widow.^[8]
