Unknown Date of Death:
Thomas is last listed in known records as being present at the birth and the registration of his daughter Grace Hay in May 1904. Both Thomas and Jessie Jane are absent from the 1911 census , however, Jessie Jane is known to survive until 1936 so no inferences can be made from their absence.
None of the marriage registers found to date for his children Isabella in October 1913, Margaret in December 1916, Isabella in August 1922, or Grace Hay in December 1929, have listed him as deceased. Usually, I would be inclined to give weight to these documents because they are contemporaneous, however Margaret Morrison is not listed as deceased in 1929 when it is known that she died in October 1919, and she is listed as Margaret Wilcox MS Morrison, perhaps because of the shame attached to Edward being illegitimate.
The one document I believe to be reliable is related to the death of his son Thomas Jnr who was killed in WW1. When his effects and estate was distributed by the army in 1920, his mother Jessie was awarded his "War Gratuity" and no mention is made of his father.
I assert that Thomas Middlemiss died between 1904 and 1920. I conducted a search of death registers on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/, born 1868 +/- 5 years for all Scotland between 1904 and 1920. It returned 2 results neither of which were this Thomas Middlemiss.
