Research Notes

William Harrison Jr was said by some family members to be the owner and proprietor of the historical Half-Way Tavern, located on U.S. 50 just east of Salem, Descendants of Charles Neff claim that he was the original owner. Did William own a tavern, was he ever associated with this one?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Above are the descendants of Robert Middleton Middleton-338 down through William Harris Middleton Middleton-333

Harrison Middleton Middleton-696 does not appear in the line because he is not the son of William Middleton, Jr.

In the Bible of William Middleton, Sr. and Elizabeth Pugh Landman each generation from Wm. Sr. to Wm. Jr., to William Harris Middleton is meticulously recorded. Harrison Middleton is not recorded in the Bible.

Clearly , he does not belong in this group. I propose a merge of Middleton 696 into Middleton 333.

I have had a photocopy of the Middleton Bible for many years. The publication date on the title page is 1772. The first entry is the marriage of William Middleton and Elizabeth Landman, December 19, 1771.

The handwriting of William Middleton b.1747 is beautiful and continues to record the dates of birth, marriage, and death up until near his own death in 1837 when I assume William b. 1775 takes over. As the family moves west, the handwriting deteriorates and paints a picture of a different level of education.

There are three generations of “Williams”, and sometimes they get mixed up. For my own convenience, I have called them: William I; William II; and William III.

Lately, I have noticed the use of Harrison as a middle name for William II. Where did that originate?

The Bible does not use Harrison for any of the middle names.

The entry for William I’s death refers to him as: William Middleton, seignyer.

William II is called William, Jr.

William III is called William Harris. From family narratives, I learned that he was called ’Harris’.

In early Westmoreland County, Virginia, the Middleton’s had neighbors named Harrison (a very prominent family) and maybe the ancestors of the President Harrison, and I think there may have been a marriage between the families. That is the only reason I can think of for a middle name of Harrison to show up. I have not seen it in any documents.

So, if someone knows why, I would like to know about it. Thanks.

Middleton-334 and Middleton-752 appear to represent the same person because: an orphan I picked up, not sure how to resolve the mothers
