LOTTIE WHAM, from Centralia, Illinois, who corresponded with DELILAH PIERCE BUCKLES in 1962 and was a member of the Middleton family, had this to say about Joel and his wives:

"Yes, RUTH FULTON CLARK was the second wife of JOEL H. MIDDLETON. She had a daughter, REBECCA CLARK that was the second wife of DANIEL J. MIDDLETON, son of JOHN B. MIDDLETON and nephew of JOEL H. MIDDLETON and grandfather of LOREN MIDDLETON. The first wife of JOEL H. MIDDLETON was ELIZABETH FORD. They were married in Tennessee. She bore his 12 children. But Elizabeth was not the mother of PLEASANT MIDDLETON. I did not know that until about 10 years ago as I was getting interested in getting together some family history. I asked the youngest daughter of the youngest son of JOEL H. MIDDLETON for the names of her grandfather's children. The woman I asked for the names was LYDA MIDDLETON ST. CLAIR, two years younger than I was at that time. Her father, JOSEPHUS MIDDLETON, was the youngest of JOEL H.'s family.

“Lyda told me that Uncle Pleas was born out of wedlock, and his mother died soon after his birth. She named JOEL H. MIDDLETON as the father and he raised Uncle Pleas as his own, which I do not doubt that he was. Now do not feel badly if you have never heard this before. There have been other children born out of wedlock in the Middleton relation and most of them are very fine men and women. There is often something very fine about them that it seems our Maker has given them to compensate for their parent's mistake.

“I asked Lyda where ELIZABETH MIDDLETON, wife of Joel H. is buried. She said in a cemetery northeast of Iuka. She must have died before Old Bethel Cemetery was laid out as Joel H. is buried in Old Bethel Cemetery. JOEL H. MIDDLETON'S real estate was valued at $16,000 in 1860. His youngest granddaughter told me that when he

married MRS. RUTH CLARK he owned 800 acres of land in Marion Co. Lyda said a lot of his substance went for Doctor's bills as Aunt Ruth had very poor health.

From LOTTIE WHAM:

“Here is a note about JOEL H. MIDDLETON that I find interesting. Soon after he arrived in Marion County he opened a blacksmith shop, the first in Stevenson Township; made plows and shod horses. Many of the knives and forks used on the table here at that early date were fashioned on his anvil. He used to go seventy-five miles for cornmeal, making the trip by night to avoid exposing his team to the swarms of horseflies that infested the country. When I was a girl one of his daughters, Emmiline, told me about riding horseback to Salem when she was a young woman. She would ride slowly until she came to the creek bottoms, then ride as fast as the horse could go to get out of the horseflies.

I must give you a list of the children of JOEL H. MIDDLETON: PLEASANT, JOHN B., HENRY, JOEL H., JR., THOMAS, JOSEPHUS, were the sons. The daughters were DICA, who married GEORGE MOORE; Rachel married SYLVESTER MOORE; EMMILENE, married HILL FULTON; JANE, married JAMES EDDINGS.

HENRY, JOEL H. and RACHEL MOORE and husband all went to Texas to live before I can remember. Uncle Henry came back at two different times while his father lived and stayed several months.”
