Research Notes

This Edward is often erroneously conflated with an Edward in Sherborne, Gloucestershire through attempts to misappropriate their marriage. Conflate may be the wrong word as such trees usually completely ignore this Edward's Somerset life.

The baptism is a touch speculative based on general proximity. There are no Midwinters in Crewkerne prior to Edward's marriage and his own family are the only ones. The name seems to vanish again after his death and a couple of weddings.

Midwynter-9 and Midwinter-93 do not represent the same person because: To be unfortunately blunt, Sir Edward deDaye Midwinter is a fantasy. The profile has no sources, which doesn't help.

The onlt reference I can find to him is an Ancestry tree (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/176004102/person/182336664058/facts?_phsrc=vmC1648&_phstart=successSource) which appears to be using the deX notation as a way of marking the mother's maiden name for the people in the tree. So deDaye is not a recoreded name. The tree is certainly conflating at least two families (Crewkerne and Sherborne, and leaving out most of the children baptised in Crewkerne at the same time as those in Sherborne), and also appears to be adding in earlier family from Northleach for good measure.

The birth date appears to be based on a misreading of a baptism of an Midwinter son of John Midwinter on 21 Jun 1579 (with no indication of any superior rank). https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/8239453?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a224f6258532b35706a43427334674b6255786957484e657045385855756b72496f694b7778766d614e5a6c593d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d

The previously attached son, William, is known to be baptised in Sherborne, and I have moved him to his correct father, as well as addeed in the other information for him and his siblings I hadn't yet put into WikiTree.

The alleged wife, Joane Elford, is the wife of a completely different Edward who is only associated with Crewkerne, Somerset. Unfortunately the Somertset Midwinter family and the Gloucestershire Midwinters have been repeatedly conflated in online trees. The Crewkerne Edward is completely distinct from the Gloucestershire families at this time, although perhaps there's an earlier common origin.

Finally, to the best of my knowledge none of the Gloucestershire family, nor the Crewkerne family is knighted. I'm willingt o be proved wrong on that, but so far I've not seen any sources to show this, and I've looked into this family a fair bit.
