Fred was born 24 Oct 1867 in Beetown, Wisconsin the son of Jesse and Mary (Garthwaite) Miles.[2][3] He married Alice Laura "Allie" Knapp 10 Sep 1889 at Grant County, Wisconsin.[4] They owned a purebred Guernsey herd on a farm one mile from Lancaster, Wisconsin.[5] In 1911 Allie's uncle, George Roberts from Kansas, visited and convinced the family the Kansas climate would benefit Allie's asthma. In Spring 1912 Fred traveled to Plains, Kansas and purchased a section and a half of land eleven miles northeast of Plains in the Mertilla community. He returned to Wisconsin, sold everything, and the family moved to Kansas by train. The family initially lived in a small two room shack but Allie's asthma was gone and by late 1914 they moved into their new house.[6][7][8][9]
In addition to raising daughters Elva and Edie, when Elva passed away after childbirth of her twins Jane and Jean, Fred and Allie raised the twins as well.
Allie passed away in 1943 and Fred on 26 December 1947 at Dodge City. He was interred at the Plains Cemetery.[10]
