Caroline Elizabeth was christened on 6 December 1818.[1] Her parents were George Miles and Ann Flicker.[2][3]
On the 20 April 1844, Caroline married Joseph Hadlow at Saint James, Paddington, London, England. [4] Joseph was a Bricklayer by trade. Both recorded their age as "of full age" and Caroline's father was George Miles, a gardener.
About a month later, Joseph and Caroline left for Australia on the ship "Templar" as assisted immigrants. They arrived in Sydney on 27 August 1844. [5] On the ship's log, Joseph's occupation is listed as a bricklayer and Caroline's as a nurse and housemaid. Carolin'e age is recorded as 25 years. They could both read and write and were both Protestant. Caroline's birth place was Bexley, Kent and Joseph 's was Berkshire. Both of Caroline's parents are recorded as being dead.[6]
In 1846, Joseph and Caroline had a son, George Hadlow.[7]
Caroline spent 2 to 3 years in Sydney, five years in South Australia, and 44 years in Victoria. [8] A "Mrs C Hadlow and child" are listed in the passenger arrivals in Adelaide from Sydney in October 1849, [9] two months after a Mr J Hadlow arrived in Adelaide from Sydney. [10]
There are no further records of Joseph Hadlow. [11][12]
The next mention of Caroline is in April 1852, when the Adelaide Observer records "Margaret Nisbet was charged with having assaulted Caroline Hadlow, on the 21st inst." This incident occurred in Solomon's bar. [13] A month later, "Emma Guyatt, wife of Charles Guyatt, was charged with two assaults on Caroline Hadlow, on the 21st and 23rd instant." [14] In the police court on 31 December 1853: "Emma Guyatt was charged with being drunk and using obscene language. Fined 10s." This snippett in the newspaper was followed by a lengthy article about an incident in Rosinna St which included " John Moloney, Jeremiah and James Callahan, and Michael Sheeny was charged with feloniously assaulting Catherine Duffy, in Rosina Street ....Catherine Duffy, a prostitute, stated ....... Caroline Hadlow said that there was a great disturbance in Rosina Street, and several stones and bricks were thrown at the windows of her house." [15]
Emma Anderson married Charles Guyatt in 1852. Charles was the brother of William Guyatt. As a sailor, William would have the opportunity to visit his brother in Adelaide, leading to an introduction to Caroline.
In late February 1853 Caroline gave birth [16] to William Henry Charles Guyatt in Adelaide, South Australia. William Henry Charles survived for 11 days. [17] William returned to Victoria in September 1853[18] There is no Caroline Hadlow or Guyatt on the shipping records, so she may have gone to Victoria by land, but there were unclaimed letters in June and October of 1853 for Mrs C Hadlow advertised in the "South Australian Register".[19] [20]
Caroline and William were married about 1854 in Maldon, Victoria. [21] [22][23]
About 1856, Caroline and William had another child, William Henry Guyatt, (about 1856- 1936).[24]
In 1867 the State intervened and placed their child, William Henry in care as a State Ward [25] on the basis that "the child is in moral danger"[26] and that the "Mother is a lazy drunken prostitute".[27] Her address at the time was in Ballarat Street, Talbot, Victoria.
Caroline passed away on 18 September 1897 at the Talbot Hospital, Talbot, Victoria, Australia. She was buried in the Amherst cemetery near Talbot, Victoria, Australia on 20 September1897 in plot Church of England-30-47.[28][29]
1. On her death certificate, her fathers name is written as Mills. On William Henry's death certificate, his mother's name is recorded as Caroline Miles. Also, on Caroline's death certificate there is a first marriage to Joseph Hadlow. There is no record of a Joseph Hadlow marrying a Mills, but there is one of him marrying Caroline Elizabeth Miles, whose father is George Miles (John George Mills on her death certificate).
2. More research is required for this period. Cannot find a death certificate for Joseph or a marriage certificate for William and Caroline, although her surname was recorded as Guyatt on her death certificate.
3. Cannot find a birth record for William Henry, but there is a death certificate with William Guyatt and Caroline Miles as his parents, and an age of 80 when he died, so born about 1856.
4. The information on Caroline's death record was supplied by Adolph Rathjins, undertaker at Talbot, as the "authorised agent".
