Communication Preferences:
I am interested in communicating with
anyone who shares the same ancestors.
Here is my family tree.
Lifelong resident of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Currently working on my ancestors who settled in the Ottawa River valley (west of Montreal in both Quebec and Ontario) from 1800 on, plus all their descendants wherever they wandered off to. Using published family trees and online research to build the tree, then using DNA matches to prove it. Along the way, I'm finding and fixing errors and omissions in the published family trees and online trees (including WT and FS).
Born north of Toronto but moved to Nepean (suburb of Ottawa) at age 2
Graduated Algonquin College in 1980 with Business Administration Diploma with Data Processing Option
Career:
Worked as student in the Applications Directorate of Transport Canada summer of 1979. Hired back by Transport Canada in May 1980 based on summer experience.
Worked on various application projects including Application Management Services' first PC application.
Over 34 years, rose from CS-01 Junior Programmer to CS-03 Manager, Corporate Web Management Services.
Retired in 2014 when Sue became eligible to retire too.
Hobbies have included square dancing, board wargaming, round dancing (choreographed ballroom dancing) which Sue and I taught, golf, birding and travel (initially for dancing, then golf and now birding). Current hobbies are birding and genealogy.
Gary is a Genealogist.
Inherited the family tree collection of Bob Milks. Following an AncestryDNA test, I decided to create my own family tree while digitizing Dad's collection. I tried Ancestry first but discovered WikiTree while researching some relatives. WikiTree suits my ethos better (I'd rather collaborate on a permanent public tree than create a private tree that will probably get deleted when I pass) so I have switched my efforts here.
Update: I'm now entering profiles into four trees: Ancestry, FamilySearch, Findmypast and WikiTree. Ancestry and FamilySearch are primarily for research however it is convenient to connect the sources found to the relevant profiles. WikiTree is still my primary tree where I cite sources from all the places I find them.
Paternal and maternal relationships are confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Gary Milks and his sister, Bev (Milks) Hobbs. Their most-recent common ancestors are their parents, Bob Milks and Audrey (Cassells) Milks. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: Siblings, based on sharing 2,572 cM across 48 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
One of my primary reasons for using WikiTree is to ensure that the thousands of hours of genealogy research I've done is not lost when I pass on. For any open profile where I am the only profile manager, it should be "orphaned" by removing me as profile manager - any cousin willing to adopt any of these profiles in future is welcome to do so. For any protected profiles where I am the only profile manager, the role of profile manager should be transferred to my sister Bev Hobbs and/or her son Daniel Hobbs.
