Baptized at St. Martin's Church in Kulsheim, his god parents were Joseph Arnold and Michael Reinhardt of Kulsheim. Immigrated as a 14 years old boy with his father, Johann Muller, his mother, Eva Spengler and siblings. His mother died en route to Buffalo. He apprenticed as a tinsmith, eventually owning his own tinsmith & hardware business on Main Street in Buffalo.
He married Marie Ursula Fougeron, daughter of Joseph Simon Fougeron, at the church of St. Louis in Buffalo, NY.
They adopted her nephew, Augustus Michael Doll, when her sister, Marie Francisca Fougeron Doll, died at childbirth. Plus, they had many children of their own.
They lived at no. 16 North Pearl Street in Buffalo.
In later life, John Miller retired from the hardware business and helped managed the Fougeron family farm after the death of his father-in-law.
