Killed during the 1st battle of Camden. Private Samuel Miller was a member of the 1st Delaware Continental Regiment, Patton's Company, during the Revolutionary War.
He gave his all for our new country at the First Battle of Camden, South Carolina.
Letter April 18, 1989 To Nancy Miller: "The that I have about Lemeul Miller and Maryland is as follows--"Lemuel Miller, Warship Capt. (Irish-French) Settle in MD about 1730-->Capt. Francis Miller, born aboard ship between MD and NC 1753- d 1843 Ill," That is off of a scrap of paper from G-Uncle David and has no source listed for the info... Hal September, 1997... Lemuel Miller is the father of a Francis Miller that we have some information on. We are primarily interested in finding Lemuel. Francis was bred in the State of Pennsylvania and born Oct. 16, 1753, on a voyage from Philadelphia to Charleston, SC. It is said "Lemuel Miller, Warship Capt. (Irish-French) settled Md. About 1730. He now deceased and there are no other clues." Nov. 1926, an obit for a gr-grand dau of Francis says: "Tracing decent through her father we find that this branch of the Miller family originated in Ireland, coming to this country about the middle of eighteenth century." This lady had her family around her in Greene County when she was born in 1844 a year after Francis died. Her father was born in 1822 and Francis lived until he was 21. No other obituaries I have located contain any family information about where the Miller family originated. There is also a Bible Page in existence showing marriage of Francis & Jane and their children. Bible says: EDINBURGH: Printed by Alexander Kincaid, His Majesty's Printers. M D C C L X X I I. (1773). Sep. 19, 1773 Marries Jane________in Mecklenburg, NC. In Francis' pension affidavit, he says he was living in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, he doesn't call it a "county". Strangely, in Jane's pension information, she says they were married in Stokes County. On his birthday, Oct. 16, 1775, age 22, Francis volunteered and entered the service of the United States. He served 3 mo. 5 days and marched to Crop Creek to subdue the Scotch Tories. November 1775, Jane is pregnant, 1776 Spring, Francis is appointed Capt. by General William Davidson over 100 men who were called Riflemen Rangers, they marched against the Cherokee Indians served 3 months, 16 days. Served under Col. Robert Erwin and General Pickens. 1776, Aug. 26 John born 1778, June 10 James born 1779, Apr. 13 Francis and Jane sell 120 acres to Wm. Lemmonds on Caldwell Creek for 225 pounds. This 120 Acres being a part of Tract No. 2 on the head of South branch of Caldwell Creek 11 Creek and adjacent James Morrison's old survey. This land was formerly conveyed from (Gov.) Nash to James Finley. Wit: Sam Martin and James McGinty. Clerk's record of the probate of this deed is lost. 1780, Aug. 17 Jemima born 1780, Autumn Marched the company which he was captain of at home from Mecklenburg to Rugley's Mill (SC); there met Col. Lee and Col. Wm. Washington and made the famous cannon. Thereafter marched to Hanging Rock, SC; served 2 mo. 5 days. The Rugley's Mill incident was on 4 Dec. 1780. 1781, Jan/Feb. Marched with his company under command of Col. Robert Erwin, Major James White and Major James Harris to Guilford Court House and placed under the command of General Green.....
