Biography

James was a Friend (Quaker)

James Miller probably lived in the area of the Antrim Monthly Meeting, for which no records have survived. Fortunately his birth and marriage are recorded in several other meeting records. His birthplace of Scorry, County Antrim was probably Scaryhill (Irish: Scaradh). At the time of his marriage to Katherine Lightfoot in 1700, he was living in Tirgarvil, County Londonderry, with his father Robert.

The records of sufferings reveal that he stayed in Londonderry until 1704. when he moved to County Kildare near Dublin. In 1729, he emigrated to America. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1729. He died in Pennsylvania around 1749.

James was born in 1669. He passed away in 1749.

Research notes

Presumably a brother or other close relation of Samuel Miller (1672-1716),

Following my earlier comment, the Ireland Quaker team and the Quakers project have now finished a review of the various Miller family profiles. You will see the results of our work in this freespace page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Irish_Quaker_Millers%2C_and_the_emigration_to_Pennsylvania and this g2g post https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1729643/quaker-miller-families-of-ulster-and-pennsylvania.

There are no serious problems with the relationships shown in this profile, but I plan to re-write the biography adding information on his travels around Ireland (Antrim to Londonderry to Westmeath) and information similar to that added to the profile of his first wife.

As you will see from the comment by Todd Stanton on the profile of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lightfoot-54, the Quakers Project and the Ireland Quaker team have been reviewing the profiles of the Lightfoot, Wyly and related families. As a result, I would like to make some changes to this profile. I have already removed two children who belonged elsewhere, and I think that the remaining changes are mainly to the text. I have already made similar changes to his wife's profile and I would like to tidy his up too, making the whole more logical.

- describing first his birth in co Antrim to parents Robert and Elizabeth, with sources.

- then mentioning his presence in co Derry where he married and where his first child was born.

- then his move to Westmeath, where the remainder of his children were born.

- all this with some details of his farming activities as revealed in his losses in the Quaker sufferings

- then his migration to Pennsylvania, with the background that other members of his wife's family had moved too, that his wife's step sister was on the same ship and died at sea (James having witnessed her will), and his own wife's death shortly after their arrival

- then his re-marriage and his will.

I would also like to make an improved research note about the place of his birth and his relationship to other members of the Miller family. We currently say that Scorry was probably Scaryhill. This may be true, but I am not convinced. Jane Wyly-228 was also recorded as born there and all other other records place her family in a different part of Antrim. We also say now that he was probably a brother or other close relative of Samuel Miller-72987. He may well have been a close relative - both Millers were Quakers who moved from Antrim to Timahoe, Kildare, but they could not have been brothers; both sets of parents are identified in their birth records and they are not the same,, and Samuel Miller identifies a brother James in his will who lives at a different location.

We can make a more orderly summary of some of the secondary accounts that mention him, and there are quite a few.

I need to do a bit more research before doing this, but want to give warning that I will probably re-write the profile in its entirety and give others the chance to comment or object.
