Biography

7/1/2022 Update: I am going to assume this John Miller was not the John Miller in Caroline Co., VA noted below; but was the John Miller who was paid for "maintenance" from about 1733 to October, 1744 per the Blisland Upper Parish Vestry meeting minutes. I assume this indicates he was disabled; not that he was doing maintenance on the church. I assume he died sometime after his last annual maintenance payment in October, 1744. He had one child noted as living across the York River from the Blisland Upper Parish Church (about 3 miles from now Eltham, Virginia on now New Kent Hwy.); and his wife is noted as dying in King & Queen Co., VA which is also across the York River from the church. His nephew, also named John Miller (1736-1782) and his wife MaryAnn Perkins (my 3rd great grandparents) also appear to have lived near the Blisland Upper Parish church some portion of their adult lives.

3/31/2022 Update: I am fairly comfortable that the John Miller, Jr. whose death was recorded in Christ Church parish records on 4/8/1730 was NOT John Miller, Jr. born 8/4/1695 (baptism date), son of John Miller, Sr. (c. 1665 - 1742). The only John Miller, Jr. that is a good fit for the John Miller, Jr. below in the Caroline Co., VA 5/14/1736 record as not appearing for Grand Jury duty is the son of John Miller, Sr. (c.1665-1742).

This John Miller, Jr.’s grandson, John Miller (c.1748 - prior 1795)’s daughter, Elizabeth Miller (1764-1835) married a James Byrd Ware in 1786 in Prince Edward Co., VA (county were my direct line Miller’s lived by 1800). James Byrd Ware was born in 1756 in Caroline Co., VA and had a 2nd cousin named Nicholas Ware (1739-prior 1760); however he was not thought to be a direct descendant of Nicholas Ware (c.1685 - 1744); however they likely were related. This Ware family connection gives some confirmation that John Miller, Sr. (c. 1665 - 1742) son of the same name was the John Miller, Jr. noted missing jury duty in Caroline Co., VA in 1736.

So I am dropping John Miller-14288 death date as 4/8/1730 in Middlesex Co., VA and noting he may have died in Caroline Co., VA sometime after 1736.

NOTE (see link above): There are 7 Hadley's buried at St. George Churchyard in Gloucestershire, England where many of James Miller's (Abt. 1617 - 1656) wife, Mary Trotman's family are buried.

John Miller, Jr. married Sara Hadley whose father was John Hadley. He is likely the John Hadley that witnessed the will of Thomas Baynes on 8/2/1709 with a William Barbee. This William Barbee was likely the father of John Miller, Jr.'s sister, Ann (Miller) Barbee's husband, John Barbee.

"(p.212) Thomas Baynes....2 Aug 1709 / 5 Sep 1709.... George Harding all estate in VA and if he die then 'to my brothers William Baynes and Christopher Baynes living in YORKSHIRE in ENGLAND', Wit: WILLIAM BARBEE and JOHN HADLEY."

Name

Name: John /Miller

Baptisim date: 4 August 1695 (Birth date is unknown) place: Christ Church, Middletown, VA, USA Wife: Sarah Hadley Marriage date: 26 Sep 1717 Marriage place: Christ Church, Virginia

Below from Middlesex County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts, 1673-1812; published in 1989:

8/2/1709: "(p.212) Thomas Baynes....2 Aug 1709 / 5 Sep 1709.... George Harding all estate in VA and if he die then 'to my brothers William Baynes and Christopher Baynes living in YORKSHIRE in ENGLAND', Wit: WILLIAM BARBEE and JOHN HADLEY."

3/27/1710: Page 51 of book: "(p.235) John Hadley....27 Mar 1710 / 3 Jul 1710....Sister Rebecca LAWRENCE whom I sent for out of ENGLAND to come live with me. Wife (not named) and daughter Sara Hadley. Exors: Wife and brother Richard HILL. Wit: Roger Jones, Adam Curtis and WILLIAM BARBEE.” [This is the Sara Hadley that later married John Miller, Jr.; the WILLIAM BARBEE is the father of John Barbee-62 who married John Miller's (my 6th great grandfather) daughter, Ann Miller-4979; John Miller, Jr. is the son of my 6th great grandfather]

8/3/1725: (p.162) William Bennit petitions on behalf of his brother (?) John Bowden, a minor, against John Miller, Jr. to have said Miller let Bowden eat with his own children and attend school." (MAYBE John Miller, Jr. has some control over school or the child)

There are three John Miller's listed as dying in the Christ Church Parish Records of Middlesex County, Virginia. It is not possible to say for sure if one of these refers to this John Miller and if so; which one:

1/28/1723: John Miller (this could actually be 1/28/1724 since the calendar did not change until 1752 where it was the previous year through the end of March.

10/19/1725: John Miller, "Jr." so a John Miller whose father was also John Miller

4/8/1730: John Miller "son of John Miller" ---- I am assuming this is the John Miller on this profile since all his children have been born by this date.

1746 King & Queen Co. court case noting Christopher Miller [Sr.] was “of King and Queen County” (highly likely the Sara Miller mentioned below is John Miller, Jr.'s wife Sara (Hadley) Miller):

4/1/1746 (link above): "Ordered That Sarah Miller pay Christopher Miller of King and Queen County for one days attendance in her suit against Henry Baden and for coming and returning fourteen miles. p. 69. Dated April 1st 1746."
