Biography

Joseph Miller was born May 10, 1790, in Lincoln county, North Carolina, a son of Johannes Letegan Müller and Mary Cross. In 1810, in Buncombe county, North Carolina, Joseph married Sarah Mary Cox, born 1794, in Lincoln county, a daughter of Aaron Cox and Ollie Baker. Sarah died in 1832, in Macon county, North Carolina, after giving birth to her last child, Margaret Lavina Miller. [1]

Around 1834, Joseph married, as his second wife, Susanna Tabitha Grant, born 1817, in Rutherford, North Carolina, a daughter of Andrew Grant and Martha Mashew Mackey. Joseph and Tabitha became the parents of as many as eight children, the eldest Henry Woodfin Miller, born in 1835.

Joseph and Tabitha are found on the United States Census of 1850, living in Macon county, North Carolina, with five of their children. In the 1850 census Joseph (age 60), Farmer, was in Tennessee Valley, Macon, North Carolina, United States.[2]

Joseph died March 2, 1880, and is buried in the Miller Cemetery, in Hogback Township, Transylvania county, North Carolina. [3] "Susannah" Tabitha (Grant) Miller died January 12, 1886, in Macon county, North Carolina and is buried in the Miller Cemetery, in Macon county, North Carolina. (See researchers notes)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Miller-64018 and Miller-17531 appear to represent the same person because: This is a previously rejected match with no explanation. Miller-64018 and Miller-17531 are obviously for the same person. Both profiles agree that he married Sarah Cox (see Biographies). Please merge or explain why they could not possibly be the same person.

The dates and the marriage to Sarah Cox certainly indicate that they're the same person. I'm wondering, however, about Catherine Miller Swaim, who doesn't seem to be part of this family (and indeed, Catherine's mother appears to be living in 1850, so isn't Sarah Cox, who died around 1832). Is Catherine's father indeed named Joseph Miller? If he is, the profile for Joseph Miller-64018 should have its dates changed to reflect that Joseph, rather than merging the two profiles. (But also in that case, Sarah Cox-24702 should be disconnected from him and attached to Miller-17531.)

Susanna Tabitha is so much younger than Joseph Miller that he must have been married before [Sarah Mary Cox (1794 - 1832) Cox-24702] because of the age of the older children.
