Obituary

GEORGE J. MILLER, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 at River Oaks Nursing Home in Columbus, Texas. He was born in the Houston Heights on May 1, 1914, the eldest of two sons of Dr. Arthur L. Miller, Sr. and Edna (P'Pool) Miller. He attended Reagan High School and graduated from Rice Institute in 1935. He worked as an accountant for Humble Oil, later Exxon, his entire working life. He met Peggy Hall of Houston while both were students at Rice. They married on Aug. 20, 1938 and made their home in the Garden Oaks area until moving to Colorado County in 1982. George was active throughout his life in several Baptist Churches. He and his wife were teachers in the adult Sunday School program at First Baptist Church of Houston, where he was also in the choir. He served as a deacon at Garden Oaks Baptist Church. He was an active member at First Baptist Church of Columbus. After having been a patient at Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, he served for a number of years on the Board of Directors. He and his wife were members of the Avion Travelcade for more than two decades and traveled extensively throughout the United States. He enjoyed talking on his CB radio, using his handle of Stop Sign. He was as avid deer hunter. He is survived by his brother, Arthur Lee Miller and his wife Inda of Columbus; two daughters, Margaret Ruth Bearse and husband Bob of Lawrence, Kan., and Mary Ann Peach and husband Ron of Weimar; and two sons, Edward Lee Miller and wife Karen of Corvallis, Ore., and George Allen Miller and wife Lana of Columbus. He also leaves eight grandchildren, George Bearse of Colorado Springs, Colo., James Bearse of Topeka, Kan., Amy (Peach) Tyer of Katy, David Peach of Weimar, Allen Peach of Houston, Kenneth Miller of Albany , Calif., Owen Miller and Robin Miller of Corvallis, Ore. At the time of his death he had seven great-grandchildren; Patrick and Zachary Bearse of Colorado Springs, Colo., Hanna and Rachel Tyer of Katy, Colton and Kyle Peach of Weimar, and Laura Bearse of Topeka, Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy (Hall) Miller and his parents. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 at First Baptist Church of Columbus with Rev. Sammy Carr officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. Henneke Funeral Home Columbus, TX 979 732-2143
