Birth: Susan was born July 15, 1828 - probably in Illinois. Her parents are currently unknown.

Married William Bright Allen on April 30, 1847 in White County, Illinois.[1]

1850 Census: "Susan C. Allen," 23, was living in District 10, Hamilton County, Illinois with her husband, William B., 26, and children Ellenette M., 2, and Wilford D., 6/12. She was listed as born in Illinois.[2]

1860 Census: "Susan K. Allen," 34, was living in Township 5 Range 5 E, Hamilton County, Illinois with her husband, William B., 36, Ellen E. M., 12, Perlina M., 8, John R., 5, Joseph H., 3, and William J., 1. She was listed born in Illinois, unable to read or write.[3]

1870 Census: "Susan Allen," 42, was living in Township 5 Range 5, Hamilton County, Illinois with her husband, W. B., 44, and children Matilda, 18, John R., 16, Joseph H., 13, Judson, 10, Henderson, 8, Hemando, 6, and Mary V., 3. She was listed keeping house, born in Illinois.[4]

1880 Census: "Sousen Allen," 60, was living in Knight's Prairie Precinct, Hamilton County, Illinois with her children, Robert, 23, Howard, 18, Amanda, 16, and Mary J., 13. She was listed as widowed, keeping house, born in Illinois, both parents also born in Illinois.[5]

On the 1883 Military Pensioner List for Hamilton County[6], she is listed as "Allen, Susan C.," cert #171,669, residence: McLeansboro, widow, $10.00 monthly allowance, originating January 1876.

Died October 2, 1899 in Hamilton County, Illinois, age 71.[7]


1. Ellen Ette May Allen: Ellen, also known as Ellenette, was born March 1, 1848 in Hamilton County, Illinois. She married Francis Marion Dailey about 1867. Francis and Ellen had eight children: William Henderson (1868), Lettie Frances (1869), Angeline (1872), Flossie May (1874), Nannie Susan (1877), Mary Louvada (1883), Bessie Blaine (1888), and Daisy Lena (1890). Ellen remained in Hamilton County all her life, where she died on February 8, 1890, age 41. Her death may have been connected to childbirth complications, as her daughter Daisy was born January 23, a few weeks before her death.

2. Wilfred Dallas Allen: Wilfred was born March 2, 1850 in Hamilton County. His fate after 1850 is not known, but he probably died between 1850 and 1860.

3. Paulina Matilda (Purlina) Allen: Paulina was born May 1, 1853 in Hamilton County. She married Virgil Thurman Calvin about 1875. They had as many as eleven children, though only eight are known: Ada Allen (1876), Mollie M. (1880), Marion W. (1882), Ora C. (1886), Martha Catherine [Mattie] (1889), Orpha Allen (1890), Virgil Thurman (1892), and Edna (1894). After her husband's death in 1901, she continued working the family's farm before moving to Indianapolis between 1910 and 1917. Eventually she moved in with her son Virgil, dying at his house on November 17, 1928, age 75.

4. John Robert Allen: John was born October 20, 1854 in Hamilton County. He remained in the county all his life, working as a farm laborer until his death on September 26, 1906, age 51. He never married or had children.

5. Joseph Hershal Allen: Joseph, sometimes Joe, was born April 1, 1857 in Hamilton County, Illinois. He married Louisa Gooden about 1877. They had five children: William H. (1879), Arthur W. (1882), George O. (1884), James L. (1887), and Bertha L. (1893). He was a Baptist minister and later an undertaker, and died in Dahlgren on March 17, 1936, age 78.

6. William Judson Allen: William was born April 15, 1859 in Illinois. His fate after 1880 is not known.

7. Howard Henderson Allen: Howard was born July 4, 1861 in Hamilton County, Illinois. He was a farmer in Dahlgren and married Laura E. Marsh about 1891. They had seven children: Effa (1892), Nella C. (1893), Rella (1896), Etta (1898), James Albert (1900), Omar Ethan (1902), and Lorraine (1906). He died January 11, 1934 in Dahlgren, age 72.

8. Amanda B. Allen: Amanda was born June 15, 1864 in Hamilton County. Her fate after 1880 is not known.

9. Mary V. Allen: Mary was born September 1, 1867 in Hamilton County. Her fate after 1880 is not known.

10. Julia Winifred Allen: Julia was born April 15, 1871 in Hamilton County. She died there on May 15, 1875, age 4.
