Biography

Clay Tefft Miller was born on 10 January 1931 in Pasadena, California to Frank and Portia Miller, their first child. Two years later his sister Frances Corrine Miller was born on October 12, 1933.

The family lived in Glendale, California until his father enlisted in the U.S. Army. They moved multiple times around the country during his father's service. After his father returned from Europe at the end of World War II, he was stationed at McLellan Field in Waco, Texas. Clay went to Waco Technical High School where he graduated in 1950. He graduated from Baylor University in 1954. By that time, his father had retired and moved to the San Diego area. Clay followed them to California and entered the U.S. Air Force working in their public relations department. After leaving the military, he took a job for a small newspaper in LaHabra. That led to his job as a photographer for the Orange County Register.

Clay stayed with the Orange County Register for 35 years. It was his dream job and he enjoyed it with passion. He loved meeting people, capturing candid expressions and scenes. He also had a special love for taking nature photos and became known for them popping up on the front page of the paper. He won numerous local and national awards for his photographs, and he was part of the photography team that won a Pulitzer prize for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics coverage for the newspaper.

He retired in 1994 and moved to the Austin, Texas area to be closer to his grandchildren. While in Austin, he stayed busy with his church, delivered Meals on Wheels, and drove all around the countryside looking for beautiful scenery waiting to be captured on film.

He passed away on 11 September 2012 after a brief illness. His remains were cremated and his ashes interred at Garden of the Saints Columbarium located at the First United Methodist Church of Round Rock, Round Rock, Texas.
