Biography of Henry Miller

The following text is an excerpt from Pioneer History of Milwaukee, Vol. 1 by James Smith Buck:

"This gentleman came to Milwaukee from Lee, New York in 1836 and opened a store where the state bank now stands, northeast corner of East Water and Michigan streets, where he remained until early in 1837, when he associated himself with William Brown, Jr. under the firm name of Brown and Miller, their store being on the southeast corner of East Water and Michigan streets.
"Mr. Miller was of medium height, had light hair and blue eyes, in which could always be seen an expression of kindness for everything and everybody. He was of a nervous temperament, had a soft voice, somewhat musical in it's (sic) tone, spoke slowly and always thought twice before he spoke; attended strickly (sic) to his own business and never interferred (sic) with others; was careful what he agreed to do, but an agreement once made was never broken on his part.
"Mr. Miller went to California many years ago and became a very wealthy banker in Sacramento, but never entirely severed his connections with us, still retaining some property in Milwaukee. He visited us yearly, spending several weeks among old scenes and friends.
"In political faith Mr. Miller was an old line Whig or Republican and as a politician was very active, held several offices among which was that of Deputy United States Marshall. He was considered one of the best accountants of his time, and a set of books which he could not understand must have been very badly kept indeed. Few of the early men are ever spoken of with more respect or affection by the old settlers as was Henry Miller."[1]

Obiturary from Rome, New York, Newspaper

"Many hearts in this vicinity will be sad to learn of the death of Henry Miller, which event took place in Sacramento, California, on January 29, 1878. The deceased was in the 71st year of his age, and was a member of the banking firm of D.O. Mills & Co., one of the most flourishing bank institutions in the Golden State. Mr Miller was born in 1807, and was also, for many years a resident of Lee, Oneida county, New York, where he had many warm friends (and family members). He removed to Michigan, and afterwards to Milwaukee. In 1850 he went to California, and after a time he engaged in the banking business as a clerk of D.O. Mills & Co., and remained so until the time of death. He was a noble, generous hearted man, whose ears were ever open to the appeals of the needy, and whose hand was always outstretched for the relief of the suffering. He leaves a wife, and several children to mourn his death.
"On hearing of his passing, all banks within County closed for the day, and for his funeral.
"Henry Miller also worked with relatives at the following Miller owned companies:
  • Smith Miller's Canning Company, Oneida County, NY
  • Fredrick Miller's Milwaukee Brewery, (Miller beer) Milwaukee, Wisconsin." [2]

Obituary from The Sacramento Bee Newspaper

"Another of Sacramento's best and most estimable citizens has passed away. About noon today, Henry Miller, who for years past has been considered the head and front of the bank of D.O. Mills & Co., of this city, in which he held a large interest, breathed his last. Mr. Miller had been unwell for a long time past, but has at times been able to attend to business, and about a week ago was out. Last night he was taken with a final chill and this morning, it felt that the end was near with him. He has resided continuously in this city for about twenty-seven years, raised a large family and accumulated a fortune here, and has always been greatly respected here. He was a nAtive of Rome, New York, aged 71 years.
"Mr. Miller came to this state in 1850, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and settled in this city. In 1851 he held the position of Deputy City Treasurer, and in 1856 went into the bank of D.O. Mill & Co., as partner, since which time he has been identified with that institution, and at the time of his death was Vice President of the Corporation."[3]

Research Notes

There are some pedigree charts on Ancestry that show him his father as being born in Germany, and that he was the product of his father's second marriage. Those charts also combine Martin Miller the father's birth date with Martin Miller the son's death date. Because of these errors and the lack of supporting evidence, I am reticient to believe and try to source those .

Henry Miller was the youngest child of Martin Miller and his wife Mary Catherine Wolfersberger, also known as Polly Miller. Martin Miller the father died in 1813. It was his son Martin Miller Jr. who died in 1863.

These sources also claim that Martin the father had the middle initial H. That is not supported by any family records including an old family Bible that belonged to Martin's son Henry.

We have more information on Henry Miller than we do his father, which is why I'm posting this note in Henry's profile, along with Martin's. One of the biographical references from Wisconsin refers to Henry working for family businesses before he pioneered to California. These businesses included Smith Miller's canning company in Oneida, New York, and Frederick Miller's brewery in Milwaukee (Miller beer). Smith Miller represents another line of Miller's who lived in New England who go back to the early settlers in New England. This is quite different from the Martin H. Miller who immigrated to the United States from Germany.

When I searched Massachusetts records for a Martin Miller, I found the missing family link. His father was Ebenezer Miller III, and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Smith Miller. See: Martin Miller for more details.
