Biography

Mary Etta Miller, known as Ettie, was born 23 June 1883[1][2] in Middle Point, Van Wert, Ohio, United States.[3] Her family moved to Berrien Township, Berrien, Michigan shortly after her birth but returned to Ohio sometime around 1895.[4] A few years later she married [Rufus Franklyn "Frank" Carles] several months before her 18th birthday, but she lied on the marriage license and said she had turned 18 the day before the marriage.[5]

Rufus Franklyn Carles and Mary Etta (Miller) Carles History, written by their son, Orley Glenn Carles (supplemented with notes and sources by their great-great-grandson, Scott Carles)

Dad [Rufus Franklyn "Frank" Carles] and Mom [Mary Etta "Ettie" Miller] were married March 19, 1901 [in Middle Point, Van Wert, Ohio, United States.[3]], they moved to Butler County Missouri shortly after.[6] My brothers Otis[7] (1902) and Henry Carles[8] (1903) were born there. [A birth record for an Odos O., born to Frank Carles and Lettie Miller indicate that the family was living in Benton Township, Paulding, OH. It states that the father was the one "by whom reported," so maybe Orley Glenn had his dates wrong.] Henry lived for 5 days [this is the only source of Henry's name, birth and death]. My Grandpa [Reuben H. Carles] and Step-Grandma (Mary Friech) were living in Edgerton, Indiana when Grandpa died. Dad and Mom went to Edgerton to help step-grandma with final arrangements and to bring her back to Missouri with them. My brother Frank[9] was born (1904) while they were in Edgerton. He died shortly after birth. They then went back to Missouri and my sister Ester Leona[10] was born (1905), my brother Otis died in (1907) and I was born a year later[11]. We moved to Sheridan, Clare County, Michigan when I was 2 (1910). That is were my Grandma Miller [Sarah Jane Bear] was living with her second husband, John H Smith. My brother Willard Harrison[12] was born there in 1911.
Calkins House Hotel and Saloon
When I was 6 and Willard was 3, Dad couldn't find work in Clare, Michigan, so he went back to Missouri and found work. The Family stayed in Michigan. We lived in an old hotel, upstairs, east of the Calkins House Hotel. Mom was a cook in the Calkins Hotel. Step-grandma was blind as long as I can remember her. She would take care of our new sister (Evelyn Grace Carles[13], born 1914) when Mom would have to work. We had it rough after living on the ranch where Willard was born. I started school in 1914. Willard and I had a little red wagon that we worked the streets and alleys in Clare, picking up junk, beer bottles and whiskey bottles. We could sell the bottles in the big saloon in the basement of Calkins House. They would set Willard and I up on the bar and give us a glass of beer each. They gave us some cigars and we sent them to Dad in Missouri. We had a big hairy shepard dog that Dad had used as a stock dog. We always took him around with us. One time I found a small weighing scale and traded it for a 5 cent loaf of bread from the bakery. This was the first time I remember eating bread that was not homemade.
We moved to Leipsic in 1916, Dad worked for the B & O Railroad and Temco Electric Motor Company. We moved to one of Charley Payne's farms. Dad chewed Red Man tobacco and could buy 3 packs for 25 cents. One day Willard got one and crawled under the bed where he chewed it. Boy did he get sick. During the First World War, Dad worked on Tom Jackson's farm. [His father's WWI Registration Card states that Tom Jackson was his employer and the family lived RFD #3, Leipsic, Putnam, Ohio.] and the During this time brother James Leroy[14] was born (1917), and Willard started school in 1917.
Willard and I had paper routes and also sold papers on the passenger trains that stopped at the junction. We also spade gardens, cut corn, husked corn and other odd jobs, anything to make a little money. When Willard was 13 and I was 16, there was a western horse on the farm. Dad had been working him very hard, plowing the fields. Willard and I had been fooling around with him for sometime. He had never been ridden. One day there was a big rain and Dad couldn't work the fields. So Willard and I blindfolded him and took him out to a big mud hole and broke him. Then we rode him three and a half miles to Leipsic and back. Dad and Mom sure got on to us. Step-grandma died while we were there (1918). [In both the 1920[15] and 1930[16] censuses, the family was enumerated in Van Buren, Putnam, OH., which is a rural township about 4 miles northeast of Leipsic.] Brother Robert Paul[17] was born (1921) and sister Ester married George Hyde (1923). She had a baby in 1924 and both her and the baby died.
Dad got a better job at W. G. Farnsworth's Fruit Farm in Waterville, Ohio. [Waterville is approximately 30 miles northeast of Van Buren, so apparently Rufus and the boys moved there as it was too far to make the daily trek.] All 5 of us kids went to school and Willard and I worked on the farm. In 1928 I quit school after the 9th grade. I married Eva Ottinger in 1930 and we had a daughter Lela. Eva died 8 weeks later. We bought some timber land at Walker Switch, Arkansas just north of Fort Smith. We harvested trees and cut them into 4 foot logs and hauled them to the railroad. Dad and Mom's house burned down with everything that they owned, while Mom was at my place looking after Lela and the rest of us working in the woods. We then moved back to Leipsic.
I worked for Fred Summerfield the bee man, 1 year then on the B. & O. Railroad in Leipsic for a short time. Then I worked for Perry's Hardware for 5 years; times were tough and I got laid off. Willard worked at any odd job he could find. Evelyn married George Hyde in 1928. Willard and I joined the Ohio National Guard for 4 years. I joined first and Willard a little later. We were in the 123 Wagon Company, Quartermaster Corps, 37th Division. There was a carnival in Ottowa [Ohio - about 12 miles southwest of Van Buren]. They paid money to locals to fight their champ. I don't remember the amount, but it was quite a lot. At the time Willard was working on a farm 12 hours. He went in to town after work and knocked out their champ. They wanted him to travel with them, but he said no.
I married Dora Marie Kidd in 1935 and the family left for Los Angeles in 1936.[18] Willard married Mabel Luverne Baker in 1938, she had Charles Emerson Carles in 1939. Dora, Lela and I lived with sister Evelyn and her husband George Hyde for a short time in 1940 and moved back to Los Angeles. Dad, Willard and I worked for the Swanee Stove Works, and Willard was killed in a truck accident while making a delivery.

Ettie died 10 May 1957 Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States[1][2] and was buried 14 May 1957 in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California, United States.

List of Residences

Throughout her life, Ettie lived in the following places:
  • 1883 to ~ 1884 - Middle Point, Van Wert, Ohio, United States.[1][2][3]
  • ~1884 to ~1895 - Berrien Township, Berrien, Michigan, United States.[4]

  • 1916 - Leipsic, Putnam, Ohio, United States.[20] From Glenn's wording, it is unknown whether the family moved to Leipsic in 1916, then to the farm in Van Buren, or if he was referring to the farm as where they moved to in 1916 (they are only about 3 miles apart, and Van Buren seems to have been unincorporated, so either could be the case).

  • 1938 - Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States.[18]

Additional Notes

[4]Lived with her family in Berrien, Michigan from ~1884-1895

Mary's family lived in Berrien, MI and lived there from about 1884 to 1895. Establishing when they arrived in Berrien is determined by the birth information from several of William and Sarah's children:
  • Daughter Mary Etta Miller, born 23 June 1883, according to all of her censuses, was born in Ohio, so the family moved after her birth.
  • Son James Sylvester Miller's death record shows he was born 10 Feb 1885 at Berrien Ctr., MI.
So the family moved to Berrien sometime between June 1883 and February 1885.
Establishing when the family returned to Ohio can also be determined from the birth of their children:
  • Son Glenn E. Miller's marriage record shows he was born in 1891 at Berrien Center, MI.
  • Son John C. Miller was born 30 Oct 1894 in Berrien, Berrien, MI.
  • Daughter Ruth L. Miller was born about 1897 (her censuses and marriage information say she was born in Ohio, but her birth year ranges anywhere from 1896 to 1898.
  • The 1920 Census for Sarah J. Miller, in Wise, Isabella, Michigan, shows Harrison Miller (son) and Glenn E. Miller (son) were born in Michigan, and Ruth was born in Ohio.
Depending on which of Ruth's records are most accurate, the family returned to Ohio anywhere from November 1894 to 1898.

[5]Mary lied on her marriage record about her age

Mary Etta Miller apparently lied on her marriage record: she claimed she turned 18 the day before her marriage, but her birth day, according to multiple sources, was after March.
1900 Census puts her birth June 1883 and her death record as 23 June 1883.
1900 (census date June 25); 17 YO; Birth Month: Jun; Birth Year: 1883.
1901 (marriage record date March 19); is 18 years of age on the 18 day of March 1901.
The following are the enumeration dates for all of the censuses she was enumerated in from 1910 to 1940:
1910 (census date April 27); Age: 26.
1920 (census date January 3-5); Age: 36.
1930 (census date April 9); Age: 46.
1940 (census date May 1); Age: 56.
Based on the census enumeration dates, and the age Mary is listed on each one, if her birthday really were in March, she should be listed as one year older for the 1910, 1930, and 1940 censuses. The 1900 Census is the most helpful source since it was enumerated two days after her birthday: not only is the age correct, but it give the birth month and year.
