Her parents were also both from Ohio. She was born in Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio per family tradition.

1860 census shows Mary Ann, aged 17, in Lucas, Monclova, Ohio, with her father, his second wife (Sarah), and Mary Ann's 19-year-old sister, Joanna.

Millersburg is named after Charles Miller of Coshocton County, Ohio. He co-founded both the Old Town of Millersburg in 1815 and the new town in 1824, to the southeast. It is not clear whether he was related to Mary Ann Miller.(1)
